Anarchy in Middle Earth

Two weeks ago, I wrote a blog called Anarchy in the Shire. It was intended as a standalone post, but as I've been reading through The Lord of the Rings I've stumbled upon material that warrants a sequel to that first blog.

Do I need to give a Spoiler Alert for The Lord of the Rings? I hope not... but just in case, be warned.

Spoilers will follow.

Okay. You've been warned.

Sauron Cannot Fathom Anarchy

In The Two Towers, the company has just found Gandalf, much to their surprise, alive in Fangorn Forest. In the course of the reunion, Gandalf and Aragorn share a lot of information with each other, including Gandalf's insights into the mind of the enemy.

The Enemy, of course, has long known that the Ring is abroad, and that it is borne by a hobbit. [...] But he does not yet perceive our purpose clearly. He supposes that we were all going to Minas Tirith; for that is what he would himself have done in our place. [...] Indeed he is in great fear, not knowing what mighty one may duddenly appear, wielding the Ring, and assailing him with war, seeking to cast him down and take his place. That we should wish to cast him down and have no one in his place is not a thought that occurs to his mind. That we should try to destroy the Ring itself has not yet entered into his darkest dream.

I thought this was a beautiful passage that clearly demonstrates the disconnect between the mind of an anarchist and the mind of a statist.

Sauron is the ultimate statist. He created a powerful magic ring that he intended to use to rule over all of Middle Earth. But he lost the ring and much of his power. Now that the ring has fallen into the hands of his enemies, all he can imagine is that they will A. Use that power to defeat him and B. Use that power to become supreme rulers themselves.

Gandalf says that it hasn't entered Sauron's darkest dreams that they intend to destroy the ring. They intend to dethrone the Dark Lord and replace him with no one.

Just as the statist cannot imagine a world without government, it hasn't even crossed Sauron's mind that his enemies don't simply seek an end to him, but an end to his entire institution.

So, my fellow anarchists; let's continue in our journey to destroy the ring of power and dethrone the dark lords of our world.

Very insightful.

Yes, statists, be afraid.

We will destroy the Ring.

We will let seven billion nations bloom.

That is what we seek.

A Final End To Slavery!

#Anarchy!

This is a very good read! Eye Opening for someone who hasn’t come to any conclusions about Anarchy or Statism. But From a Christian NAP supporter:

I believe that God commands us to be servants of our leaders even in their Apostasy, until he works to free his faithful when faced with the specific time he will pour out his wrath on the systemic perversions.

We should, however, Listen to his counsel and work to fix and change our civilian government to come into harmony with God’s principals, which are the principals of the NAP and so forth, but I do not believe that it is in his will for us to create a New Argorist System, at this time, separate from our current Government but work within this one to effect peaceful change as it as it was designed, into an Argorist System. I say this specifically because of Romans 13 and other scripture but also because of the futility presented by the current and most powerful and Evil systems of government ever devised on this Earth now in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Active Resistance is Futile unless we are working within the civil framework it provides for change. In the absence of that ability, then I might have a different opinion.

We have no Magic Rings

As a Christian, I agree that our role is to submit to worldly "authorities" as both Paul and Peter right insofar as we do not disobey God's laws. Our role is as witnesses, not revolutionaries.

As for the rest of your comment, being an anarchist I'm sure it's no wonder that I don't entirely agree, but I like the way you're thinking. Maybe I can give you a bit of a push to "convert" you ;)

About a year ago a wrote a whole series on Christian anarchy, if you're interested in giving that a read.
