Should I buy the Amsterdam Pass or is it too expensive?

Are you traveling to Amsterdam for one day? Are you considering whether or not you should buy the Amsterdam Pass for one day which costs between 54-60 euros? That is a lot, isn't it? Is it worth it?

In this article, I will take a closer look at the Amsterdam Pass, and whether it is worth it or not for you. The easiest way is to make an imaginary itinerary in which you do different programs in Amsterdam, and then check out whether it is worth it or not.

One thing that is very easy to know is that if you plan on using public transportation, and also plan on visiting at least 2 of the places that gives free entry with the Amsterdam Card, then you are for sure in plus already with the price of the Amsterdam Card. But, instead of just writing out in thin air, let us take a look at some examples.

This itinerary makes you save money with the Amsterdam Card.

• Use public transportation several times (9 Euro)
• Visit the Rijksmuseum (23 Euro)
• Do a river cruise (appx. 15 Euro)
• Botanical garden (12 Euro)
• Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot (17 Euro)

This is an amazing day in Amsterdam and you a maximizing everything as you only do activities 100% supported and covered by the Amsterdam Card. The total price of the card (depending on where you buy it) is then at most 60 euros.

What is the price of the programs mentioned above if you would pay them all on the spot (and do not forget that you need to stand in line to buy your actual tickets as well compared to just entering with the Amsterdam Card)?

The price of the programs would be: 67 Euro.

What does that mean? If you do this, you save approximately 10 Euro with the Amsterdam Pass.

This itinerary makes you loose money with the Amsterdam Card.

Let us imagine that you buy the card, but decide to do activities not fully covered by the card (or not at all). Here you have an example.

• Heineken Experience (you get a 25% discount, which means you save 7 euros).
• Red Light Secrets (you need to pay full price)
• Van Gogh Museum (you need t pay full price)
• You travel with public transportation. (9 Euro)
• You do a free river cruise (15 Euro)
• You rent a bike for free. (15 Euro)

This is a really busy day, but even though you do the free river cruise, do a free bike rental, and travel for free with public transportation and enjoy the discount at the Heineken Experience, you still save less than the actual price of the Amsterdam pass (you save approximately 45 euros, but since you pay at least 55 euros for the pass, you are in loss).

What is the conclusion?

Whether or not you should buy the Amsterdam Card totally depend on the activities you want to enjoy. If you plan on doing several activities supported and covered by the pass, you are probably going to save money. But if you plan on doing activities and visit places not covered by the card, it most likely isn't worth it.
