PAPA-PEPPER JUST GOT A "SELF-GOAT" THANKS TO SMAILER & EXPLORETRAVELER - NO KIDDING!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #amazing6 years ago

Thank you so much @smailer and @exploretraveler!

A long, long, long, long time ago in steemit history, like even more than a year ago, @smailer and @exploretraveler pitched in to get @papa-pepper and family a milk goat for our homestead. While this has always been on my to do list, so have a lot of other things, and we wanted to make sure to take advantage of the right opportunity too.

Today, it finally happened!

OUR VERY OWN MILK GOAT!

Earlier today a few of the @little-peppers took a trip with @papa-pepper to "settle some unfinished business." This beautiful young doe happens to be a mix between the Alpine and a Nubian varieties, both of which are well known for their milk production.

Of course we will have to let her breed and kid first, but we have our very first milk goat! Before too long we can be producing our own milk and other things like cheese!

It was a very long and exhausting day, but she is safe at home now. Interestingly enough, there is a lot more to the story, some of which I will try to share tomorrow.

WAIT, THERE'S MORE?

For now I will share this interesting photo as a clue, and also mention that @bluerthangreen may have some stuff about today that he will soon be sharing too.

As I close this post though, I will once again mention how amazing this community is. The real life care, concern, and compassion of other steemians has been a huge blessing to so many of us. Also, the kindness and generosity displayed by steemit community members has also been amazing! I'm so glad to be a part of this wonderful example of what an online community can be! Thank you steemit, @smailer, and @exploretraveler.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Yay!!!! Your very own goat. It's quite a milestone for a homesteader. Goats are like gateway drugs, first one goat, then two, then ..... Happy goating, you all are gonna love em'.

LOL - The gateway drug of homesteaders! LOL!

Just wait, it's true, bwhahahahaha.

you too will know the joy of her kicking the milkpail over..
you too will know the untold joy of...backaches from bending and squatting to milk her.
a milking stand for her to stand on and eat while you milk her should be a HIGH priority.
(don't forget the headstall)

kinda like THIS

(I painted mine red...back in the day...on the Llano Estacado..when I had a milk herd of nubian goats)

KA BRITO!!!!

Ah the cabrito!

I will have to build one of those, and they double for shearing sheep! Thanks again man!

We had small holding when I was a kid. We bought the land to Home our horse and then got a goat. One led to two, which led to three. Within a couple of years we had a herd of 35 goats, we were supplying milk, cheese and meat to local health food shops etc. We also had pigs, ducks, geese, chickens etc.
Those were good times. If I did it again I think I would get an almpaca! They look like fun.

Good luck with your new addition. Goats are a lot of fun so I’m sure the whole family will enjoy it.

Congrats on the new goat! They have RVA Goats here in Richmond, VA which is a Co. in which goats eat all the weeds as an alternative to chemicals.

Beautiful sheep! As far as your diet is concerned, do you feed them with a strict diet?

this is a great way to work, milking goats is very good, and the protein is also amazing.
thank you @papa-pepper for sharing.

hehe great selfie-goat! xD

Thank you! You guys aren't too far from me. Are there any animals that you are interested in? Pigs, Muscovy Ducks, Rabbits, etc? Perhaps I could gift you some!

That sounds great! Ill asked the Mrs. We just recently got out of rabbits. We love chickens though! Fun heritage breeds!

Muscovy Ducks can be a good substitute for Chickens too.

Would they need special care in the winter? What do they eat?

This should give you a bit of info. http://www.moosemanorfarms.com/about-muscovy-ducks.html

If they are mostly "left to their own" they seem to take care of feeding and breeding on their own pretty well too. Some feed and a place out of the elements should be provided in the winter, but if you are ever interested, let me know. You could always wait until spring too.

Man, I would love some ducks. Unfortunately, the Mrs. said we should wait until spring. I really appreciate your willingness to add to our adventure. I suppose we will keep plugging away. We are still trying to finish our house. Take care of the animals we currently have. Not to mention it's firewood season and you gotta take care of cold people! I will continue to blog out our adventure on here and grow out steemit. I would really love to grow our followers so that our blogging may be able to add to our homestead! If you have any ideas or tips I would love to hear them! I'd love to have a collaboration post with you to introduce us to your followers. Any chance you could resteem our introduceyourself post? If not I understand. Thank you again for everything!

Spring sounds good, and hopefully we can meet up before then too. Maybe we could create some content together. I could interview you, and maybe some other stuff too.

Are you on steemit.chat yet?

can't wait to here the rest of the story

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long!

Incredible your adventures post motivated me a lot I was in the forests this weekend looking for some nice shots to submit to your contest #combinationphotography but my SDcard look corrupted working to recover some pictures so I could take part and IF not I will watchout for the coming one.

Oh no! I hate it when an SD card malfunctions! Glad to hear that you are submitting something this week, that STEEM "COMMUNITY" Silver Round will be a great prize!

Have not submitted any yet on getting home when i inserted the SD to system it won't read so sad..

I hope that you get something to enter this time!
