Braveheart is a biography of William Wallace during the 13th century war for Scottish Independence which demonstrate wonderful leadership trait and skills he had during the period. The movie explores how Wallace, a commoner who wanted only to live a quiet family life and self-serving clans and raises and leads a campaign against the English. Young William Wallace witnesses the death of his father and his brother at the hands of English troops. When the same happens to his love as well newly married wife then he oaths to rebellion English rule at all costs. He was supported by Princess Isabella, Robert the Bruce, and other allies, as he struggles to throw off the yoke of the English crown. The movie deals extensively with Wallace’s visionary leadership style.

  • William Wallace was a Visionary Leader: This movie conveys some core ideas on the nature of visionary leadership in the workplace. Wallace’s vision and ability to bond with his followers allowed him to be such a good leader. Also, in the movie Wallace was depicted as a person who has a strong and confident personal image and moral conviction. To be an effective visionary leader one needs to have: core vision and purpose, self-awareness, ability to unite people through demonstrating self-commitment, communicating the vision.

  • William Wallace was a perfect example of Inspirational Leadership: Wallace is an inspirational leader who uses transformational leadership in order to rally his men to follow him into battle and fight the British with him. This movie displays inspirational leadership skills through Wallace’s personal characteristics, the follower’s characteristics. William Wallace’s personal characteristics are one of the defining factors of his inspirational leadership style. He was just like any other Scottish man from his exterior look. However, he had the heart of a giant and was a great leader of men.

  • Transformational Leadership is not a new concept: Transformational leaders must be authentic. They can not just think about personal gains and expect good things to happen. Transnational leaders must be able to work with others and not only think about themselves. Part of working well with others is being able to motivate each other. Transformation leaders are always setting the bar higher and higher each step of the way while working with its followers. In the movie Braveheart Mel Gibson shows this by at first his goal was to become a leader in the Scots army. Since he achieved that he set another goal; this goal was to defeat the English. Transformational leaders can also recognize individual growth as well as followers growth. The last point is that transformational leaders are very creative. They encourage team members to create new ideas as well as embrace originality.
