Japanese Somen and Senbei (Ricecracker)
Everybody loves Japanese food, but most of my friends only know Sushi, Ramen and Tempura.
Japanese cuisine is one of the most diversified cuisines in the world, so today I want to introduce something for hot summer days.
Things to buy:
- Somen Noodles
- Mentsuyu (prepare it, or just buy in any japanese supermarket)
- Welsh Onion
- 300ml cold drinking water (put some ice cubes into the water)
Add-Ons
- Natto (if you like Natto)
- Tempura (if you want to make it really tasty)
- Shiso (Hard to get)
Instructions:
Somen is like pasta, you just need to boil water and put the noodles inside. It is usually 1-3 minutes. You need to cool down the Somen, so in countries with clean water, use tap water to wash it and cool it down. After that put 10 ice cubes into the noodles so they really cool down.
Cut the Onions
The somen noodles look like this
Prepare the Dip
1/3 Mentsuyu + 2/3 Cold Drinking Water + Onions (+ Natto/ Shiso)
Put noodles into the Cup and try a bit, sometimes the Dip is too strong, add more water if it's too salty.
Enjoy!!!
To make the Somen taste even better, try to add Natto or Shiso. That really enhances the taste. If you know how to make some tempura, than prepare tempura and eat it with the Somen. This adds a layer of luxury, if you add Tigershrimp Tempura or Vegatable Tempura if you are Vegetarian or Vegan.
Somen or Soba is the perfect dish for Hot Summer Days!
Dessert
Japanese Rice Crackers or another Japanese Dessert will complement this easy to make dish!
I love Japanese food, it is beautiful and sometimes easy to prepare. Mostly food from Japan is healthy and you don't too much meat.
Please leave a comment, let me know if you like Somen!

I had sushi before but the way in which you blog about it I think I will head to a sushi restaurant here n Antigua! Very informative stuff!!!
if you had sushi before and didnt like it, give it another try. go to the most expensive sushi restaurant in your area, and buy the best you can get. If you still dont like that, we need to meet in japan :)
@knozaki2015 I cried when I first had my sushi I didn't know that wasabi taste like what it taste like. My ears smoked like that of a dragon in anime and tears uncontrollably rolled down my cheeks and my nose run but I love Sushi to death!
they cried, because they had never eaten something so special and pricey before ;)
i think it were tears of joy and fear...
so the tuna of the black fin tuna we ate, was so special and perfect, that even I still can remember the taste... but I still remember that we paid 27 $ per piece for that nigiri...
it was not about the wasabi ;)
i see .. tears of joy ...
27 per piece - wow again .. pretty pricey it must be that delicious!
haha. but I had people cry in japan when they tried that japanese black tuna toro sashimi... ;)
because of the wasabi or the spicy cayenne slices?
I've never had that yet. I wonder what that taste like.
Bon Apetit!
;) It is very easy to prepare. and tastes amazing
I love asian dishes. My favourite is thai food. I have to try this out! Thanks for sharing
well I can see you have never been to Japan ;)
and thai food has a lot sugar, so i try to order it with less sugar. (but i Love it too !)
You´re right I have never been to Japan before but I will soon! Maybe I am gonna visit a good friend of mine. He told me a lot about Tokyo and I am so exited for that!
I am open to new dishes so I´ll trust you and try out some japanese food as well ;)
ping me when your plans for tokyo align. i will make sure to prepare a list of restaurants for you
@knozaki2015 - and very spicy .. you could tell them "niet noy" meaning not too hot but it still is too spicy. I didn't know they're sugary. No wonder, I was pigging out back then, I thought they were just so delicious.
yeah. all the creamy coconut green curries have a lot sugar and calories. it tastes so good because of the sugar and the creamy coconut ;)
I love pad thai, but that has an insane amount of sugar, so i always ask for 1/3 of sugar only. its still great !
I love pad thai too, took a video of how they make it in the night market in Krabbi years ago, so it's actually sugary - i guess that's what explains why the wok pan turns brown one vendor had to scrub it with a toilet bowl brush - I didn't buy it because of that - morbid!
@knozaki2015
You are really opening my appetite with the japanese cuisine
;) good to hear. but I will post some vietnamese or thai stuff soon. have plenty of that too
japanese food is really easy to prepare and great !
On a different topic, Thank You for the $3 transfer! Was that a tip?
I think you were on the curie list. I send 3 SP to all writers mentioned on the yesterdays list!!
Thank you! It was Steemtalk.org - my Steemaholic article. I'll check out older curies to see if I made that too. That's awesome - I'm a waiter who blogs about it, so following you now.
;) great ! thanks for following!
Love all Japanese food. Thanks for sharing! :)
thanks for following and voting mate !
I love Japanese food, too!
They really put much attention to the details and the way they prepare their dishes. I love Korean food the most -they are almost the same -
The Jap's however made theirs lighter than that of the SKoreans.
I'm getting hungry again T.T
haha, I love korean food. but i am not sure if you really know japanese food if you compare korean food with japanese food ;)
I also had Japanese students back then ...
They invited me for dinner most of the time because back then I tutored their kids in the evening. Their food isn't as spicy as that of the Koreans.
Both of them value eating food with great health benefits though.
They didn't just served me soba or somen or udon but a home cooked family dinner style with side dishes, too. I can't forget the cabbage roll my first Japanese family has served me with Yakitori their mom cooked herself.
The only difference was - the Japs are more reserved than the my Kr students. I don't remember laughing out loud on any of the dinners I had with some of my Jap students. I just remember - there were many moments I forgot my name because their food were freaking delicious - both Korean and Japanese .
yeah my korean friends are louder too ;) but japanese are only shy if there are foreigners are around. usually once they get drunk, they arre pretty loud too...
yes, even the women, I have a few Japanese friends, also reserved but I guess everybody is until you often mingle with them.
I'm not Japanese but I'm also reserved ... but not with people I've already often communicated with. Anyway, I love your travel blogs ... looking forward for more
I actually meant - they are the same when it comes to the attention to the details, the way they prepare their dishes - almost like a ritual.. and health benefits - not the taste .
agree. in asia food is very important..
it is ... I miss that .. I sometimes eat in restos that says they serve Asian cuisine here but - I miss the details and the taste is really different.
I get to score ones that are close to what they are supposed to taste like but they are pretty pricey. Asia - is food paradise - it just is.
what sushi? what noodles? I just finished eating a very delicious pork dish hahaha Pork is life, pork is love.
;) yeah. thats the reason you will only life until 80 while I am already 122 years old !
oh come on. I hope I go to bathroom on my own when I am 60 years old. what i am gonna do at 122 ? hahahahah
haha ;)
:D the comments here are very funny
@thebluepanda ..
if you're still young looking and healthy... and maybe rich with crypto currency
there's plenty to do
@knozaki2015 really? You really want to get to 122? I'm walking out at 91 - hahaha
I love your posts about Japanese food as I have said before it my favourite cuisine in the world and my time in Japan was amazing not just because it is a beautiful and fascinating place but because the food is the best in the world IMO. Makes me want to go back to Japan but with the weak pound it becomes less likely. Thanks for sharing:)
Well but in London you have pretty amazing food.. I will ask Nobu next time I see him to accept Steem $ :)
What would you say is the best place in London in your opinion for Japanese food? I will make sure to visit it next time I go there because where I live in the North is quite far away.
well it all depends on the food you want to enjoy.
if budget is not an issue try Nobu:

I haven´t tried Somen before, but definitely gonna make it at home. I´m in love with Japanese food! I visit the Ramenbar every single week here in my hometown in Hamburg.
Upvoted :)
yes somen and soba. Somen is white noodles, while soba is Buchweizen Noodles. So you can try both.
for soba get some nori papers, cut them in little stripes and add them onto the noodles!
you can buy it in any asia market or japanese market in hamburg !
