Hard drugs, soft Death - poem

Here's a short poem inspired from the fiction i wrote for the @air-clinic writing contest.

Hard Drugs, Soft Death

Say no to drugs, why?
They make one feel so high,
Yes, ten times as light,
And on cloud nine....
Pain and hurt deadened,
Mind dives in the mirage,
To build castles in the air;
With such hallucinations and apparitions;
What ecstacy, living in a fool's paradise!

But such ecstacy, how short-lived!
Back to normal, the reality to pursue.
But weakened, i cannot attain,
Need a little more dope, and a little more wee;
Nerves to calm, visions to improve;
One step, then another;
As hard drugs must have their toll,
The cause and effect form the pay roll.

A psychiatric and neurotic patient emerges;
The erratic visions, now blurred or dimmed.
Life loses its meaning, purpose and ambition.
In its stead is an empty living carcass, merely existing,
A burden to the society,
A woe to the family,
A ramshackle of a being.

Had i known!
Is the last of my dirge,
To the wretched one
Who refused to amend.
