The Africa you won't see on TV - Post #6; Hell's Kitchen

in #africa6 years ago

Once upon a time, there existed a village in the Marafa region of Malindi. They were your ordinary village: trading, giving birth, cooking…

One day, a messenger came to the village and told the villagers that something major was about to happen. He used the word “miracle”. As such, the people there were expected to vacate the area.

“Just go. Find somewhere else to settle.”

They did that, only an old woman would not have that. She chose to stay behind. At her old age she didn’t have a lot to lose, after all. Well, just like the messenger had said, the mysterious event came to pass.

That’s a true story. Okay, it’s the legend behind the formation of the grand-canyon like Hell’s Kitchen. The depressions are honestly some of the most beautiful mess I’ve ever seen. While we don’t know where the villagers vacated to, at least they left behind something heavenly. Nothing is known of the woman who decided to stay behind.

Minimal and undocumented research has hinted that the depressions came about as a result of erosion from the wind, floods, and rain over the years; explains the jagged edges. Apparently the place was once a sandstone ridge.

One of the most impressive facts about the place is that the rocks change color depending on the position of the sun. I got to experience this and it is breathtaking!

Pointers
It gets very hot, hence the name
There's an optional fee of $1.50 to cater for a guide
If using public transport, leave the place before 6 p.m.

Tell me: does this look like a place you would like to visit?
