The Africa you won't see on TV - Post #3; Fort Portal

in #africa7 years ago

What comes to you mind when you hear Uganda? A President who has been in power since 1986? You didn't know that either? Well, now you know ☺️

As is the case with most other countries, their worth has often been measured based on dynamics the ordinary person has barely any control over. In as much as we fight for change, there is only too much that one can do, especially outside the political class.

This is part of a continuing series, that seeks to showcase Africa in a different light. That said, let's jump right into it, shall we?

Uganda has some of the rawest natural resources there is anywhere. Any time I feel like I need a break, I cross borders into this East African country. It also helps that Ugandans are always very helpful and polite.

It is impossible for me to say what my best place in the country is, but here follows one of the places I call home and will keep visiting.

Fort Portal is located in Western Uganda and is heaven on earth. Honestly. The area is home to around 86 crater lakes. This is the largest concentration of crater lakes in the world. Yea, you read that right. One then wonders why we don't get to hear about it; that's huge!

Some of them are a few meters deep, whereas others run to 100s of meters, making it very dangerous to swim in. These lakes all resulted from violent eruptions that took place 10,000 years ago. Most of them are now inactive, but the possibility of some of them being active has not been completely ruled out.

I stayed at an an open house. BTW it's exactly that: no doors or anything. It is just you and nature.

Views from the loo 😁😁

Some of the lakes we've visited

A pompeii-like explosion led to the creation of these lakes. I like calling it a beautiful mess. These lakes remind me that even seemingly bad events could lead to great eventualities. If you're lucky, clear days reveal the expansive Ruwenzori Mountains.

I hope you enjoyed the post. Is this somewhere you would want to visit?

I think I am the only person who has never stepped beyond our borders. How long did it take you to get there from Kenya?

To Kampala from Nairobi, it's around 12 hours by road. From Kampala to Fort Portal is another 5 hours by bus, then you use local taxis or bikes to get to the lakes. Long journey so take a breather in Kampala. Given you can work remotely, you could always travel more. You will love Uganda for sure 😊

I have been to TZ but never UG. You are just inspiring me to travel more.

Uganda is very beautiful. It is always green since they still receive regular rains (there are government-sponsored tree planting projects). Fort Portal is heavenly!

Very interested, please do more of such. Never knew Uganda had such beautiful places

Thank you @njoromuts, I'll keep writing 😊. Uganda is out of this world!

Do you print your photos?

Yes I do, Mutitu. Did you see one you'd love printed out? Here's a link to my Instagram, too 😊.

I should travel more often, seems to be alot out there.

Yes you should, @cmbugua. It broadens ones perspective, and with proper planning, it doesn't have to be an expensive affair.
