Walking&thinking - ActiFit journals (2.12.2018.)

in #actifit5 years ago (edited)
I have discovered ACTIFIT! From what I have read about it so far, it is an amazing app that tracks your steps and by using it to prove your daily activity, you earn its tokens and even upvotes from it. Since I walk a lot and use my walks as a sort of meditation practice and an opportunity to contemplate, why not include all of that in my posts? I have decided to start with a new series called Walking&thinking - ActiFit journals that will be about my thoughts and contemplations that I had while I made those steps. Are you ready to take that journey with me?

ActiFit sounds like an amazing way to inspire people to be more active and as such may even be a thing that will change someone's life. Who knows, maybe it will even change mine. Today was my first day using it and it was more like a test-day. Let's see how it went...

I have a MiFit2 watch that I usually use to track my steps, distance, heart rate, sleeping patterns, and calories burned. I am very satisfied with it. I have tried different apps on my phone to compare them with my watch and so far, all of them have recorded much fewer steps than the watch. It is logical. I have to remember to carry my phone around while the watch is always on my hand and besides, for some actions both my hands are needed so there is no way to hold the phone too.

How did ActiFit perform?

I have decided to test it by NOT holding it my hand. I was holding it in my pocket for the most part of the day. It was located on my hip and partly on my leg so I guess it was registering the movement correctly. The funny thing is... It shows more steps than my watch. MiFit says 6784 steps and ActiFit says 8042. I have no idea how is that possible. I had a usual Sunday with light walking, having lunch with my family and drinks with my friends. I only had 3 conversations and around 10 messaging so the phone was not picked up that much that it would make such a huge difference. Any ideas people? Let's make it interesting...

Today was all about brakes, those that hold us back and slow down our journeys. Those that are made and owned by us. I will contemplate about it some more tomorrow during my actual walk (weekends are a bit slower when it comes to activity ergo the low 8000 number of steps). I realized that there were some convictions that I hold which are my brakes. Things that are slowing me down and keeping me from achieving my full potential as a human being. I guess there is a lot on my plate to think about on my tomorrows walk. See you again soon.

I would think that any device that measures distances would have to be calibrated and so it probably has a very short default "step distance" that it uses to calculate the distances from GPS location to another GPS location.
Not everyone's stride or step spans the same distance, some are longer and some are shorter.
Normally I won't even look at an actifit blog post , but since it was you I gave you the benefit of my two cents worth.

Thanks for that explanation. It was the first thing that came to my mind too but the thing is... GPS was off the entire time, I did not turn it on once in the entire day and do not like it very much. It empties my battery so I avoid it :)

It may be that it uses some other way to calculate position like the cell towers do with triangulation from them. I don't know, just guessing again. The phone company knows where the phone is at all times when it is powered on, even phones that aren't connected with a service plan can make emergency phone calls here to the emergency 911 number.

That's a cool idea... I did notice that my Actifit recorded more than I actually did, like a day where I only walked from couch to kettle as I was ill and watching netflix.

I also use my walks as a meditation, and contemplation . Of late though that's combined with podcasts - think and listen to cool stuff.

Yeah, I love podcasts and audiobooks on my walks! So happy to hear that you enjoy walking meditations and contemplations too 💚

Glad you found it! I’ve heard about it and read a gazillion posts. Hope it helps seems like you have a great routine already in place too

I think it will help me stay on the right track and motivate me to do even more, thanks for your support 💚

Sure thing! Anytime

That is so cute running after the pizza.
Today we did a walking meditation indoors. Walking is so good for you anyway.
Good idea testing it out. My explaination as to why it is recording more has to do with it bouncing around in your pocket. Hey, worth a try.

Yeah, I think it is very sensitive and registers even the slightest movement. We will see how today will go. I am sure you have enjoyed that walking meditation, repetitive movements of our bodies while they walk do wonders on our mind 💚

I tried actifit one day and noted it counted more steps than my other apps, when I get back into longer walks each day again soon I must try it again and start posting with it

When I heard that someone will pay me for walking I concluded that I should walk day and night :D Motivation is everything I guess :)

Ohh yes any form of motivation is good I was averaging ove 60 miles a week walking and hope to get back to that soon

I love your style of Actifit report- and I'm excited to follow your journey with it. I'm on day 3 today and it has motivated me to get up and moving each day... even through the rain... whereas normally that would have definitely been used as an excuse to remain on the sofa otherwise! I like your idea of meditating whilst moving. I tend to use my walks as a way to try to calm my mind and get out of my own head... so maybe I'm doing the opposite?

As for the additional steps. I have two possible suggestions. One: You are so excited about using Actifit, that you're positively vibrating with excitement vibes and your phone is picking these up as additional steps. Two: (more boringly perhaps) if you have an android, you may have the "aggressive background tracking" enabled under settings. If so, might be worth trying a comparison without this turned on?

Evie xx

HAhahaha, your explanation is the best one so far, I like it! 💚

I love being part of this community and hope it will do both me and it some good. Sending you much love 💚💚💚

Welcome to actifit. It is funny, I have the opposite problem. Mine records less steps than I actually am doing 🥴
I counted steps and checked the app.
Maybe it likes Europeans better- figures they already are fit but that Americans need a bit more movement to get fit 😂

Posted using Partiko iOS

It records less? WOW, hahahaha, yeah maybe it like European figures :D
