Street Photography Contest with Nathen007: February 24 2019

in #actifit5 years ago (edited)

Planned to get going with my permaculture ideas but got distracted by a street photography contest hosted by @nathen007. I live in a very pleasant but boring part of town, mainly big houses set off the road with large gardens, Upper Poshington, my friend calls it. I wondered where I was going to find anything remotely interesting.

Then I came across this (it flashes, too):

Apart from the pelican crossings this is the most exciting thing going on in my part of town. I'm very pleased it's there as well, because it reminds me to take a left turn at Mayfieild Road roundabout before I get embroiled in the roadworks.

The roadworks themselves are about a mile and a half long, from the rail station to Mayfield Road. They're going to cost about £3.5 million, about half of that coming from European Funds. New cycle lanes are being installed with a small kerb between the lane and vehicular traffic, together with Dutch style bus stops where the cycle goes behind the stop and shelter, away from the traffic.

Pavements and junctions are being improved for pedestrian safety and enjoyment. Apparently, it's all part of making Leicester a joined up city with better walking and cycling facilities, and better public transport routes. The junction outside the railway staion (complete with a bus stop on an island in the middle of the road) was truly horrible: dangerous and didn't work for anyone - cars, bikes, taxis, buses or people.

Access to the station for picking up and dropping off was so inconvenient that inevitably cars and taxis stopped on double yellow lines in the bus lane. Sadly, a cyclist was killed in 2017, knocked into the path of an oncoming van by a passenger opening the door of taxi which had stopped outside the station.

So these roadworks, inconvenient as they are, come not a moment too soon and will make a big difference. And here they are, heralded by this sign.

Haha I think most places have a Upper Poshington, wow that does sound terrible @shanibeer sounds like a miracle only one cyclist died, very sad.

It was terrible and although there were a number of tragic elements, basically it came down to the taxi driver stopping in a place that wasn't safe. Even after the accident taxis and private cars continued to stop there: they would get booed and hissed and shouted by people in the bus queues but it didn't seem to deter them. There is a camera there now and its an automatic fine if you stop there. Bit silly that people can't work out for themselves that it's dangerous and inconsiderate. I dislike the way that cars have precedence over everything else.

Most idiots dont care and are only thinking of themselves if there's any problems they will blame someone else, glad they placed a camera there this will also be useful incase of any other drivers trying to do anything too daring @shanibeer.
