A bit of perspective + TreeTuesday - Actifit: October 22 2019
Today for #TreeTuesday I bring you a little game and some fun. The picture down below is the maple tree in my front yard. There is also a cluster of birches to the right. I’m going to share several pictures of this tree. This one is from about four days ago, before the rain and wind came. Isn’t it fluffy?
Here’s the game: see if you can guess how tall the maple tree is.
I can’t just give you the answer right away. That would be too easy! Instead, in this next picture, I’m going to show another picture of the tree from this morning, after it has been windy and raining.
It’s not so fluffy anymore! I’m sad, but I’m just so glad we have had a gorgeous fall with some bright days and beautiful colors.
Okay, but back to the game! The truth is that I don’t know how tall the tree is, but I do have a picture that will give you perspective on its height. It is a very very big tree!
The following is a picture of my kids standing in front of it.
It took me five minutes to walk across the yard! Just kidding. Thanks for reading and thank you to @old-guy-photos for hosting #treetuesday!

Nice Maple tree...hmm, I guess the height of your tree is 36ft..

Whoa! Really? More than 36ft...

Good guess! I’m thinking at least 42 feet, so you are certainly in the ballpark. 😁
What a difference after the wind blew the leaves off the maple tree.
I was thinking if your son is about 6 ft. In height, then the tree’s height could be somewhere between 36 and 42 ft.
Good guess! My son is just about 6 feet tall. And I think the tree is about 7 or 8x his height, so yes you are right in the ballpark, but I’d say 42-48 feet to the tip-top branches! 😁
The kids certainly look happy!
I'm thinking that tree is at least 60 feet tall. That's a big maple!
Yes I think it is at least that tall. But I don’t have a long enough measuring device or a way to get up that high! 😁
When I first saw the question I knew that it will be pretty high...but "pretty high" is not an answer! And the actual height you showed by comparing it to your family members still gave me a wow because it's still way higher than what I imagined...
It will still be fluffy when the time comes! Wait for it :)
Ha ha. Yeah, I kept taking pictures of the tree and thinking it looked so small in them. I finally had my kids pose in front of it for comparison. 😁
If you know the height of one of your kids... if you line them up right, you can use similar triangles (or trig if you can measure angles well...) to estimate the height of the tree! You just need the have your eye on the ground level... line their head up with the top of the tree... measure their height, and then the distance from your eye to their feet and then distance from your eye to the foot of the tree!
Thank you for that awesome education, my friend!

Sorry, it wasn't that clear... I should have drawn a picture..
No I thought you did great. You are a natural teacher! 😁

What a beautiful golden autumn!
Thank you, @amalinavia!
@jayna - wow it certainly is a tall one. And what a difference a few days and a little (lot) of wind makes. Good looking kids!!
Yes, the wind and the rain do bring the leaves down, especially if they are timed just right!

Now there’s an actifit post! Some trees, family and a good amount of steps.
That is a damn big tree too. Just tucking in for the winter and giving you some stuff to rake.

Oh yes. I do have a cleanup project on my hands! Fortunately, the leaf blower collects it pretty quick and I have some woods where I can dump all the leaves!
Hey @jayna
It's got to be at least 60 foot. It's a beauty. Great pics.
