Quality vs Quantity on Steemit

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

What is more important, Quality or Quantity? The reality is that we have to sacrifice one for the other. But these are not the only things we have to take into account in our efforts to create.

Time, Money and Quality

Time, money and quality are 3 things that have an interesting relation with one another. You can't have all three when trying to create something. When you want to do something fast and of high quality it will cost you more money. If you want to create something fast but for little money it will be of low quality. If you want to create quality but at low cost it will take you a lot of time to achieve.
These simple rules apply to a lot of things in life. To achieve your goals you will have to balance time, money and quality.
Most of the time people choose 2 of the elements and accept that the third will not be fully achieved. For example when my TV broke and I needed to replace it fast (and at low cost), I accepted the fact that my new TV might be of lesser quality. If I would have taken my time to research and save for a bigger budget, I would have been able to buy a better quality TV.

Quantity

Having a large quantity of something often diminishes the quality. The phrase too much of a good thing comes to mind. It is often not only the possession itself that lowers in quality but the pleasure you get out of it.
The rarity of an object makes it more valuable. If diamonds for example were as common as a rock would they have the same value?
The same goes for when we are creating something. When we produce in large quantities the value for each creation lowers. Items from mass production have less value than handcrafted objects.
We value handcrafted objects more because they have been made with more attention to detail, love and quality.

The bottom line

When you are creating, writing, posting, what are you going for, quality or quantity? Are you mass producing or handcrafting your posts?
Determine your goals and accept the possible outcome. If you want quality and money than it is important that you take your time. Research and preparation, these are the keys to producing quality. If you want to do something fast than accept that it will be of lesser quality and you will receive less money.

Take your time and enjoy yourself in creating something of high quality, even if others don't see it for what it is. The most important thing is how your feel about what you have accomplished.

Nice! RESTEEMED!!!

Thank you, felt good writing it :)

This dilemma of quality versus quantity exists everywhere in our world, not just on steemit. Nice philosophical post.

Thank you, I was thinking about adding the philosophical tag but went for inspiration instead. And you are right quality vs quantity is a dilemma we are faced with everyday of our lives.

Good advice. So, so hard to remember. I'll be following along, hoping for more like this to keep me going the right direction.

Thank you, I'll try to live up to your expectations :)

Thanks for sharing! This is a frustrating triangle when you really want all 3 and know there just isn't a way to have that. But what to sacrifice? That is the question.
I choose to write less often and spend more time on each post, and hopefully, I can produce better quality that way.

Me too, I take my time. Better to have fewer posts but higher quality.

Thanks for sharing this. How long have you been on Steem for? I'm quite new and still finding it hard to figure out.

I joined in June, so for about a month now. It can be confusing at first, but there are great tips on Steemit. Also check out discord and steemit chat. There are always people there willing to help. Minnow support is a great way to get started. They even have a channel where you can post your blog for a review and get pointers.

Wow, thanks for the tips! I've set some time aside to spend on here tomorrow to try and get my head around it all

Well it's a daily dilemma, and at the end of the day my posts are a mixture of both :)

:) trying to have it both ways are you? Does it work for you? I find it hard to post a lot and put some quality in my work.

Well my dirty mind interpreted the trying to get it both ways in a NSFW manner :)

Well what I do is through the week I post a couple of small posts per day and in the weekend I post the quality content that I work on gradually through the week

I've always been a wordy mofo, so I tend towards the longer, hand-crafted pieces as opposed to the mentality of 'write two sentences, throw in a picture, and call it a day' approach. I can understand both, but my thought is I'd rather create something people actually enjoyed reading because that increases my chance of an upvote, resteem, and/or following.

That said, when you don't have much time, I think it's important to put something up there, just so you've always got a little something rolling in each day. :)

Time is the real issue for most people I guess nobody has the time to work on their posts for hours. I think it shows when someone just slapped something together. It doesn't matter when someone hastily post something but the reward either gaining followers or upvotes will beless, in my opinion

One nice feature of steem is we have the ability to do either. When I wrote for demand studios it was a massive hassle. They had an editor go over your posts and they often required me to dumb down my posts before they could be posted. The quality I had put so much effort into was diluted so that an editor could approve it. It took more time to write poor quality posts. I like the freedom of steemit!

That's the power Steemit :) must have been rough someone messing with your work.

That's for sure! The maximum you could make from an article was limited to $10. What a terrible maximum payout for many of the articles I wrote. I spent a lot of time researching them. The incentive was writing fluff, not complicated technical posts. The people writing fluff made lots of money. It was better when it was ehow. They allowed you to earn based on google ad payouts.

Suggestionbot, are you following me? you old stalker :)
