Losing influence and gaining control

in #philosophy5 years ago

It must be quite an amazing feeling to have 60,000 people singing the words to a song you wrote in unison with you. Just think, all those voices under your control. Is that the kind of influence you are looking for?

I have thought about influence on Steem in many ways over the years, and while I don't really want to lead anyone, I do know that my own voice has had impacts on some people's behavior. I have wondered if I had stayed silent, would people be better off? It is impossible to actually answer because, I have no idea who or how I have influenced those I have affected.

While the blockchain records all of the transactions we make upon it, what it doesn't do is record the interactions of the mind and body that are reactions to what we have encountered upon the blockchain. Even the affected don't know what led them to say this, do that or feel this way.

What I do think though is that often, people take their cues from what they surround themselves with and if surrounded by negativity, the chances the mind moves to meet the mean is high. It is difficult to be happy in a sea of sorrow. This then also influences on us in other ways, whether it be what we might consider attractive in others or, which investment is considered worthy.

What has been your greatest influence to get you to where you are?

Some might answer their parent, or someone else they consider in high regard and want to look up to or be similar to in some way, but that is likely an unknown lie. The greatest influences on our lives probably pass by largely unknowingly as they influence us without our attention being paid to them.

It is because of this that I try to keep my environment free of junk mail and advertising as, I don't plan on settling for myself as a consumer class player - I want to own my experience. We are what we eat and if we consume junk, we think junk and our actions turn to junk.

Regardless of who you are, we are most likely all influenced heavily by our surroundings and, who we interact with, what we read, the ideas we believe. We will attempt to protect ourselves from being wrong by believing those who support our position and, this is the internet, there are always people who can be found.

Thought circlejerking.

Groups of people who form an echochamber that wind each other up to create an environment that feels justified, that legitimizes the thoughts and fears and provides a type of negative camaraderie. Rather than cooperate to build, the cooperation is formed to tear down, to attack, to harm. It is a type of toxicity that tries to influence others to join and ridicule those who do not while using the energy to further dig members into the attitude.

Attitude.

Just think - with all of the experiences of your life and all the people and events you believe have had an affect on your outcomes - did you answer "my own attitude" to the question up above?

You may not have 60,000 people chanting your name, singing your songs or listening to what you have to say - but your experience and whether you accept the movement of the world or attempt to be a barrier against it is your responsibility.

Attitude could be your greatest help, or your greatest harm. Can you influence your own attitude, or haven't you that level of control over yourself?

But you want to control others?

Thinking......

My attitude is terrible some days, and those days are usually not great. But sometimes my attitude is good, and guess what? :)

Can you influence your own attitude, or haven't you that level of control over yourself?

Sometimes but probably not enough.

But you want to control others?

Sometimes but that never ends up good.

I've worked for years, to improve that damn attitude thing. Still can't get it right, and I'm my harshest critic.

If I was in charge, things would be my way. I've screwed up before.

Yourself and @tarazkp, though you come across as decent people, still managed to intimidate me, early on. Not any more though! You're both a couple of influencers now who I can easily look up to, comfortably, and not feel as if I'm any less.

So there's your moment of zen.

still managed to intimidate me,

It is my impressive masculine physique - "godly" is how some people describe.

I hear things like, "Oh gawd, look at his body" and "I can't even look at that body, Gawd..."

I'm glad you can do that because I think both you and Taraz influence how I act too. The pleasure was all mine when we met at the Steem Festival and I can confirm he is decent people.

I wonder how much differentiation is possible between attitude and mood. If I can recognize I am in a bad mood, can I adjust my attitude to mitigate damage. I could have a terrible day at work and be in a bad, but should that mean I won't play and read a book with @smallsteps when I get home? I think too often we don't do things because of our mood, but perhaps it is a conflation, and we are actually not doing them because of our attitude to our mood.

¡Attitude to our Mood!

Yes!! that's the One Million Dollar Question.

Moody - that is a word I have been called a few times. I guess that means I brought other shit to someone else, which is a bum thing to do.

I have friends who's motto is 'attack the day', they are very upbeat and would likely by most be seen as successful in life. This self-motivation early on each day really works for them - i should take a leaf.

Over the course of the last year or so I have read a good deal on just how much influence our sub-conscious has over us even though we think we are under control.

One of the books the highlights this is "as a man thinketh" by james Allen. The working of the book leaves a lot to be desired the main takeaway is worth over looking the prose.

Personally I have been moving more towards a more minimalist lifestyle. Not only physical positions but less negative thoughts, less toxic people, less processed foods....ect... you get the point.

It is hard to avoid unwanted influence in this world. it is everywhere. But past all the junk lies some truly magnificent and beautiful influences too. :-)

I think if we all did this, we would all be better off and f we all did this, other people would be better off too.

No I don’t want to control anyone I’m a bad influence! 🤣

(Additionally I get actively pissed off at anyone trying to control people that don’t want to be controlled)

I don’t think I’m self reflective enough to tell you what my greatest influence was either 😅 it was probably me in the end as I’ve dropped all the wrong things and made all the wrong decisions to focus on the wrong thing 🤣

Do tell more.

I don’t think I’m self reflective enough to tell you what my greatest influence was either

I self-reflect too much to know that I am a mess ;D

I’m the one telling people to think for themselves and not follow rules/orders if they don’t make sense or feel off and giving them ideas on how to follow the dreams that everyone else is telling them in no uncertain terms to just give up on because they won’t work 😅

(And if I know I also tell them how freaking hard it can be and that there’s a chance it might not work out but how badly do they want to try because I suck as a life guru just believe in yourself and manifest it type)

Nothing particularly exciting 😝 I’m just a bad influence because the parents of these poor kids just want them to have nice safe jobs and nice safe predictable lives.

While never violent, I have always been a rebel against authority in various ways. It has taught me a lot about conformity :)

nice safe jobs and nice safe predictable lives.

They are in for a nasty future I think.

Have you rebelled against the rebels? I still have this atrocious habit of devil advocating everything to everyone (though I don't actually do it outside of my head much these days out of sheer laziness) so everyone hates me equally XD

I am one of the people who have been greatly influenced by their articles. I read several writers about Steemit, trying to understand how this works and if it is worth the effort, I found very few people who really understand Steem's potential and even less who know how to transmit that knowledge, you have both virtues. Thank you for making it simple, entertaining and keep us motivated to continue. Keep writing and influencing many more people to believe in Steem's future.

Thank you, that is some praise.

When it comes to not seeing the potential, I think that many people focus on what they know and where they think they are going without having a look around from the bird's eye view. Potential doesn't mean realization, but it has to have potential to realize anything at all.

If there are shadows, there is light. And viceversa!!

There is no other way but explore in both to find the truth my friend. :)

Polarization can be a problem where at some point, they no longer meet to evaluate their judgements.

Well yeah, everything is gonna depend of where each one is standing. };)

Most of the time I can! However, sometimes our surroundings get the best of us! Enjoy!

I try to control my surroundings as best I can in simple ways. Not having the catalogues arrive through the door means, much less desire to buy. Advertising makes it feel like we are missing out on things we don't need.

With regard to your question re: your influence here in steemit @tarazkp I'd like to say that I am always uplifted and encouraged to read your very insightful posts. I absolutely agree with your viewpoints on attitude too. We can't always help having one (due to unexpected and unpleasant circumstances) but we can control how long we let it hang around. I think of bad attitude as a cloak we put on to protect our feelings or make us feel better temporarily but if we don't remove it, it will weigh us down and become a burden that will effect us negatively in so many areas of our lives.

Thanks so much for giving us the benefit of your wisdom and positivity. Steemit are lucky to have you. Enjoy your weeknd. 💐

but we can control how long we let it hang around.

Being able to reduce the time it affects us from doing what we should is a skill that can be developed. Some "get over it" quickly, others hang on forever.

True. Attitude's are a lot like forgiveness. We can't control getting hurt but we can control how long it takes us to forgive. It goes against human nature and requires a lot of inner strength and faith in the healing power of forgiveness but bitterness serves no good purpose and often causes health problems.
