10 Top-Rated Puerto Vallarta Restaurants - Are They Worth the Hype?

It's always a bit of a mystery whether the highly-praised restaurants in a new place are actually worth all the fuss. Through our travels through Mexico, we've found some 5-star restaurants where we waited an hour to get in to be just average—and they come with a much higher price tag, too.

There are dozens of Puerto Vallarta restaurants on Trip Advisor that people rave about, but we came to find out they're not all as good as people say. Today we have two videos sharing some of our favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and some we won't be returning to again.

Watch both videos below.

Have you been to Puerto Vallarta? What was your favorite spot to get grub?

Wow. . . I haven't been to Puerto Vallarta before, but from experience, just as you shared, the big names aren't always the big deal when it comes to delivering value.
Here in Nigeria, some not so big restaurants we call mama put prepare better delicacies than the big restaurants around town.

This is correct. A lot of folks in Nigeria would pick the "mama put" over the KFCs or other multinational eateries in a heartbeat. I believe the demand for more homemade meals has let to the success of eateries like The Place and Green Miller.

Exactly! We've found the "mom and pop" restaurants to be much more flavorful, have larger portions, and come with better prices (for the most part). Perhaps once a restaurant gets too popular they can't maintain the same level of quality people first fell in love with.

Thanks for sharing that little tidbit, too. Never heard the "mama put" phrase before.

I personally believe that the term "mama put" refers to a child asking their mother for more food. So imagine a child holding out their plate and saying "mama, give me more", "mama put".

While growing up, the mama put sellers used to carry their food on their heads and call out for buyers much like the tortilla guy in your video. If the woman is known for her delicious meals, she may have a swarm of buyers surround her, with their plate in their hands, trying to get a portion of the meal before she runs out of food. At this point you hear them saying mama, put, mama, put to get her attention. It is usually very chaotic. This could also be the origin of the term "mama put".

Wow, thank you for sharing! I had no clue what the origin might be. Your description is perfect, I can totally picture the chaos of someone with a big batch of fragrant-smelling food. And everyone's basically saying, "Pick me! Pick me!" After we got a taste of the amaaaazing tortillas that guy is selling every day, we can totally relate to how the "mama put" people feel.

Thanks Maddie, I am always happy to share my culture with whoever cares to listen☺️.

I see that once again, you were treated to your very own private concert at Camaron Express. LOL. Oh those pancakes at Pancake House looked like heaven!

I'm amazed you noticed that in the background! After editing the video, Jordan was the one who pointed it out to me, I had totally overlooked it! Great observation :) It's so unique to have musicians coming up to play you music at every meal here in Mexico. That's not something that ever happened in the US and we really like it...for the most part! Somtimes it can be really loud and intrusive.

That first picture litterally made my stomach start growling. It also made me want to travel. Hope you are having fun!

Tell me about it! The whole time I was editing this video I was like... Must....have...more...ceviche! Hope you get the chance to travel soon! I'm sure you'll find some food to rival these dishes. :)

OMG I really want to eat that. This is will be my first resteem 😁

Thanks so much @anne-c! We appreciate the support.

They're not all as good as people say.

ooooh I bet you guys are in taco heaven... so. SO jealous! (and I'm sure Laska is too)

Also, I wanted to let you know that I had the pleasure of featuring the lovely @sharingeverybite in a post honoring female steemit badasses today <3

Happy International Women's Day!

Yass, every day is #TacoTuesday here! And, of course, Laska-trying-to-eat-our-food Day is every day. Lol

Omg, that is so sweet of you!! We didn't even know it was International Women's Day. <3 I see you mentioned TangerineTravels, too, we are so honored!

@tangerinetravels, it is so cool to watch your adventures unfold on Steemit. Particularly enjoyed the food review and the free-range chickens on the streets of Mexico. That happened in Indonesia a lot when we lived there.

Congrats on your full-time Steem gig!

Where does Laska stay when you guys are eating out?

Thanks for continuing to follow our journey! :) Were the chickens and roosters as loud in Indonesia as they are here? Not sure if you can hear them in this video, but in this one you can lol.

Laska has been chilling at our Airbnbs because she misbehaves at restaurants...constantly trying to steal food off people's plates and lick toddlers in the face. Lol! Always a constant threat of anarchy and being banned from restaurants. If she ever decides to be more obedient, we might be able to take her along sometimes.

I lol'd @ Jordan's reaction at Lattey Bistro Cafe. :)

Sorry for the late-ish reply on this! I am so honored to be featured. Thank you @wadepaterson. Always putting a smile on my face! Of course I'm going to upvote it though ;)

Thanks for up-voting my post about BTC today. Good to see you are still enjoying good food in Mexico....your food looks delicious!
