Wiz Khalifa’s Puff Gesture
This Wednesday, rapper and Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa was given the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at the Pirates/Orioles game in PNC park. As it has been widely reported, Khalifa, wearing a “Legalize It” tee shirt, made a “weed smoking gesture” prior to throwing the first pitch.

This set the entire MLB management structure into one big hissy-fit.
The result of Wiz Khalifa’s little stunt was that Major League Baseball reprimanded the Pittsburgh Pirates and issued the following strongly worded statement:
“Marijuana is [a prohibited] substance in all of our drug programs. It’s unfortunate this situation occurred. The Pirates have informed us that this should not have happened”
The Pirates organization promptly apologized and promised this would not happen again.
The hypocrisy of this situation is overwhelming on so many levels.
- If Wiz would have worn a Budweiser shirt and gestured cracking open a cold beer, would the MLB had reacted the same way? They certainly wouldn’t risk embarrassing their major sponsors Miller and Coors?
- Pretend to smoke a joint and all hell breaks loose. Kneel during the National Anthem and you don’t hear a peep. What about Wiz’s right to free speech?
- Cannabis is now recreationally legal in 7 states. If a Marijuana company offered to sponsor an MLB team, that would change their tune.
The MLB (and to an extent, all major sports leagues) have just proven that they can and will crack down on behavior when they feel like it and their decision making process is totally arbitrary.
Yeah I'm a big stoner but I don't think it was appropriate. He wouldn't have done it like it was a beer it wouldnt have made no sense, it could be any drink who would know? That gesture he made can't be mistaken... I mean u ask wiz to throw out the the first pitch I guess u should expect it knowing what he's about. Snoop didn't tho, 50 cent didn't pretend to kill anyone haha He just threw the worst pitch ever! :) Maybe I'm getting old but idk..doesn't seem very classy with all the kids in attendance. Like I said I smoke everday but I grew outta the showboat and talk about smoking weed all the time phase..
I just found this interesting considering the big row going on in the states over the sports figures using the national anthem as a platform for protest. The NFL has sat back for well over a year and did nothing citing they do not want to infringe on a player's "right to free speech". And yet, one person makes one inappropriate gesture during the opening pitch (a time when most people are not even paying attention) and the league has an all-out conniption.
The hypocrisy is absolutely karmic.
Yeah I personally think the anthem protests are horseshit too. The players have other platforms to protest whatever theyre trying to say. It's actually causing more of a devide in the USA imo. I'm glad I live in Canada :) That tho is a bit different to me than Wiz pretending to smoke weed on the mound. Maybe I'm just old and cranky? That's why I like hockey. The players show up to the game in suits, they stand respecting the US and Canadian anthems then they proceed to kick eachothers asses for 60 mins. After that they shake eachothers hands and go home. Noone goes to a sporting event to get a dose of political protest I don't think?..that being said I'm fine if ppl feel the need to voice their opinion, that's just mine
