Retro NES Game Review: M.C. Kids

in #gaming8 days ago

I had the opportunity to play a old NES game called M.C Kids. The name often makes people pause for a while and they are usually thinking either 2 things. It's a game to do with kids singing a certain type of music, or if it could have anything to do with McDonald's?.

Well if you were thinking McDonald's you would be correct, and who would of thought there was such a game on the NES?. The version I got to play was the one from 1991, from the starting presentation I liked the Virgin Jet passing just under the clouds, yes they were the people behind the creation of this game. The intro sound played is very similar to another game that I have heard many times before.. but can't remember it's name for the moment. I remember they also produce decent games but for now back to M.C Kids, which plays it's title screen music for a while.

What I don't like is I think you have to sit through some credits every time you boot the game for a few seconds before the game presents you with it's two options. There are no other options for you to waste your time on. If you just press the start button the game will begin, but if you wait you can move your character around on the tittle screen to select which of the two options you want, either 1 or 2 players.

It's great to see another game offering 2 player options on the NES. So the story begins with the M.C Kids likely camping out in their backyard in their tent at night, they are reading a book from Ronald McDonald. The book beings with saying that Ronald was at a picnic and brought with him he's magic bag. Just when he was about the use it the so called Hamburglar stole the magic bag from Ronald and ran away.

So from my perspective I think the kids who were reading this book suddenly imagine themselves in this world having a adventure with Ronald, and of course on a mission to get back the magical bag.

Once with Ronald he quickly explains that you must retrieve at least 4 cards from the levels a round his club house before he can help you further in finding the Hamburglar. I'm a little confused to why you need the cards first before he can help you but it's the premise for the game going forward. I thought perhaps later this would be explained to why you need the cards but I don't think it was mentioned.
Regardless we start with a world view map where the different levels are situated in, which I really like! Think like Super Mario 3, Super Mario World on the SNES, the Donkey Kong games or Adventure Island after the first game etc.

Apparently some players were not happy with the world map being ripped from other games, but honestly "I really like it" also it's not like the map is the same one taken from another game, I think it's different enough to enjoy.
So of course I picked to start with level-1 because returning to Ronald's Club House he just explains again that we must get out there and find the missing cards.

Staring the game I discover it's a platformer like most NES games, however I must say some of it's choices seem very similar to the Super Mario games. Saying that you can't jump on enemies to take them out, instead you must throw blocks at them. And speaking of blocks it seems early on this game will heavily use them, but it's not so clear from the start how. Most blocks you can pick up and throw but after they are sadly no longer useable, while others can be used to fill out a missing block, You can then stand on it to gain height for a ledge for example. Took me a while but much later into the game I discovered if you throw your block up you can catch it again as it falls.

The games levels are also not linear, for me personally I'm not keen on platformers like this because developers often hide things offscreen which feels cheap to me. And already very early on this it seems like a game that will have many hidden secrets, I just hope it doesn't stop you from progressing as I usually am not a fan of this gimmick.
However it's not really that bad, yes the game has many secrets but most aren't too bad to discover, but it's likely young children would struggle with some of the more basic ones. The game does force you to find these cards or else progress will be halted. But again I think the game is mostly forgiving because not all cards must be found to progress. The secret cards are for a few extras towards the end of the game that I was not able to unlock due to not being able to find all the cards.

Graphically the game is more colourful than others and looks nice with it's cute graphics, however while it looks nice it's lacking detail which sadly gives in a often plain feel. This thankfully gets improved later in the game with a little more variation keeping the levels still interesting.

Music wise it's decent, they use mostly the same track, luckily it's kind of catchy that I caught myself humming it a few times. I hoped there would be more music to enjoy later but no.

Once you complete a level you can do them again if you want which is great because it often feel like you have missed something, and you will need to keep doing this until you have enough cards to progress. By doing the levels often you will most likely accumulate a nice number of lives, well if you can't help but keep collecting the (m)s floating around.

You can take a certain number of hits represented by hearts, which I found you can gain them back by hitting the enemies with blocks. A very interesting feature is on some ledges there are special blocks that if you run by them your character will be upside down, like this in a sense it's creating a different level for you to deal with. This of course means more puzzles and paths crammed into the same level, cleaver.

There are 6 levels in the first world and later you will be introduced to a few other worlds with around the same number of levels, so actually there's a really good sized NES game here.

Sadly like most NES games there's no way of saving any progress made, meaning the lives I collected while trying to find everything will be lost next time I play the game. I think for most first time players of M.C. Kids it may be useful to collect extra lives earlier in the game for later sections, finding some secrets I think depends on just trial and error, however you may find a level where you enjoy farming for lives. So I was going to initially bin M.C. Kids mostly because of boring level design which is a shame because it's graphics are generally pleasing. But I actually started to enjoy searching the levels for secrets, like I mentioned earlier, unlike other games this one isn't too harsh on you. It wasn't just finding the secrets that I enjoyed but I also found the levels to continue to be relatively improved on how they look. And so due to these things I decided to keep M.C. Kids in the collection, it's actually a pretty good game for the time. Hope you all have a good day or night and I will hopefully see you on the next Steemit post.

im still on final fantasy 2 ... given the playtime i put in in the last years it took over 6 months realtime to finish the first one :p

every year still new nes games are being made, some kickstarters really bring in some decent beermoney

this is one of my personal favs from the neo-retro post 2020 period

https://eldenpixels.itch.io/alwas-awakening-the-8-bit-edition (no affiliation)

ofcourse that was before budget for games went below zero

good to see you find time do switch pace

Argh I only got half-way through final fantasy 2 back in the day, so.. I will have to restart it at some point again, and make sure I finish it!

I played through final fantasy 1 years ago and it did indeed take a while, I have actually recently restarted it and will play it, if I ever get a few spare moments.

I'm right at the start, I decided this time it will be a warrior carried by all the wizards types, I usually pick a black belt to help the warrior. So let's see how it plays out without him haha.

Yea it's really awesome that people still make games for the NES, the library of content on that console seems endless already. But I try to stick to mostly what was there originally because there is already so much to enjoy and explore.

Elden pixels eh, at first I thought it was going to be a Elden ring side quest on the NES haha. Alwas Awakening looks nicely done I'm also going to have a look around itch, thanks.

I would enjoy spending some more time gaming and writing about it on Steemit, but unfortunately for whatever weird reason currently gaming here seems to be a tag curators pretend doesn't even exist.
