Softbox vs Umbrella
Have listen to many professional photographers discuss why they prefer either softbox to umbrella studio light, vis-var-sa. I will like to share my personal view on the importance of either softbox or umbrella.
UMBRELLA
This has been the most used studio equipment and it's being more relevant,mostly in the indoor photography, in order to arrive at a perfect result. As I have said earlier, umbrella is mostly used to get a perfect shot in an indoor settings. umbrella is perfect to direct/diffuse the light to specific part of the subject, it gives more concentration to where exactly you want the light to be or spread to.
More especially umbrella on the subject is mostly ash, depending on the colour of umbrella, sometimes it takes the originality of the the tone of the subject away, in replacement for more light.
SOFTBOX
Most time i prefer and more comfortable using softbox in taking my indoor shoot. As the name goes, softbox is cool when it comes to give a perfect diffusion on the subject. The light spread equally on the subject and give the subject soft and cool tone, which gives you easy work on the editing part of the shot.
Am going to unveil a shot taken using both umbrella and softbox. You will see from the shot below both the beauty and the dislike of umbrella light and softbox

both are good and have place. I also like to shine through the umbrella and use it as a kind of soft box, adjusting the closeness of the bulb to the umbrella to increase and control the amount of sharp versus soft light on the subject.
