Auschwitz and the Banality of Evil

View this post on Hive: Auschwitz and the Banality of Evil

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

In stories and film evil is dramatic, but in everyday life, it's the creeping little things.

On the flip-side, it's like Frankl told us that doing good is in the virtuous little things.

I am putting this here since it is on an older post and most won't see it. You can take it and then I can remove it later if you want.

Hey wow! Seems a bit bizarre to say 'great photo' but it does capture something of the mood for sure.

It's fine to leave it here.

Probably best if it's left subtly on the chain rather than shouted about anyway.

Cheers!

I wouldn't describe your post as "gushing" - it's incredibly thoughtful, and quite different from many of the more emotional responses I've heard from people who have visited these camps, but who have struggled to put their feelings into words.
It's so important to think about why these things happened, as that is the only way we can prevent them happening again. I will definitely read Bauman's book.

learning to live with differences is the the most challenging yet most important task facing humanity

I couldn't agree more. Very thought-provoking post.

Hey thanks. I only meant with reference to the end bit - 'gushing' !

I had the same feeling at start not to go because I've been to some other camps. Well, visited Dachau for about 5 times and it is ravishing me every time I'm there. For my surprise Auschwitz was different than Dachau. Auschwitz is pure sadness and sickness of the ways humans can act on each other.
Like said on the spot this sick efficiency is disturbing.
Coming to the main problem, of challenge the issue, I don't know what would have I've done there if I had to work for the exterminators side. I told someone there that the choice to stand up against this monstrosity and to shut up and play it safe for the loved ones would be a tough one and mostly will choose the second. Fear is a very big motivator.

Coming now to the main idea as far as I have perceived it. We need to challenge from the start the so called solely truth as it is the only chance not to let it develope into massive fear as fear when it is strong will triumph reason in most of the cases.

I agree - challenging people's 'truth claims' is crucial, yet without falling into a postmodernist free for all!

I would defo do more 'genocide tours' if I was in the area where they took place.

I think it's important to immerse yourself in these things.

Then again maybe I'm just morbid!

It is not morbid, I would call it self awareness. History took it's tool and it is our duty to remind and be reminded by it.

That'd maybe a better way of putting it!
