New translation service outperforms Google Translate!

Summary: No translation software is more accurate, according to DeepL. A supercomputer in Iceland improves deeplearning algorithms.

Do you want to make a quick-and-dirty translation of a text? Since yesterday, Google Translate and Bing have had a new competitor, DeepL. A perfect grammatical and content-based translation does not yet give this robot a perfect grammatical translation, but the German technology company claims to have' the most accurate machine translation service in the world'. However, for the time being, the service currently supports barely seven languages, but that list is added as soon as possible.

Superior translation robot

The early translation service claims to have smarter algorithms than its competitors, and the source database of the Linguee search service also helps for better results. The German DeepL is also the owner of this search engine, which started in 2009 and allows users to search for bilingual texts. All of this ensures better performance, as demonstrated by the Bilingual Evaluation Understudy scores (BLUE). In this study, texts by human translators are compared with those of the robot. DeepL, with 31.1 points, broke Google's record, which at' barely' 28.4 points sticks.

DeepL uses neural networks to convert a target text, comparing sentences grammatically with other sentences in a dataset. With Beam Search, the company uses a system of probabilities in translations. Advertisements are also absent: the company wants to earn money by licensing an Api. DeepL plans to release it soon so that other products can also use its software, such as apps for language learning, dictionaries and digital assistants. Google also uses this revenue model.

Currently you can translate from and to Dutch, English, German, French, German, Italian and Polish ", says project manager Hans Mooijer. At the end of the year we want to add Mandarin, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian to it.

Icelands

The company is located in Cologne, but its software trains it on a supercomputer in Iceland. It can deliver up to 5.1 petaflops and ranks 23rd in the top 500 supercomputers in the world. Why in Iceland? Ginder is the energy cheaper, which means that we can curb the costs ", Mooijer explains.
