IGNORANCE CAN EMBARRASS YOU.
From that time forth began Jesus to show unto His disciples, how he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and Chief Priests and Scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord, this shall not be unto thee. But He turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan. Thou art an offence unto me; for thou savourest not the things that are of God, but those that are of men. Matt. 16:21-23.(KJV)
What a sharp rebuke from a Friend and Master? Here is a classic example of ignorance involving Apostle Peter. Before we get too deep in this, it is important to note that in the earlier verses of this passage, Peter had the singular honor to have had a clear and personal revelation of Christ, when he said, (verse 26).
“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God”. This revelation earned Peter great honor and respect among his fellow disciples.
It was immediately after this great and remarkable revelation by Peter, that Jesus began to foretell His death and resurrection. One would have felt that after such great revelation about Christ, Peter would know enough about Christ’s purpose or His mission on earth.
But, we realize that it was not so. Peter made one of the coolest mistakes in his life. He rebuked Christ for saying what He said. He actually rebuked his master on an issue he knew very little about. Jesus did not waste time to call Peter to order or go into a long and windy explanation. “Get thee behind me, Satan” was the reply Peter got for his ignorance.
I believe, Peter received one of the greatest shocks of his life. To have been told “Thou art an offense unto me; for thou savorest not the things that are of God, but those that are of men” were sufficient to cause Peter to faint. Peter learned the hard way. With these words from his master, we know that Peter made a mess of himself, purely as a result of spiritual ignorance.
The lesson is very obvious. Peter was ignorant of God’s plan concerning the mission of Jesus Christ on earth. He was ignorant of the fact that Jesus Christ did not come to stay but to give His life as a ransom for many, (Mk 10:45).
He did not know that Jesus Christ was ordained from the foundation of the world to be the one to die for the sins of the whole world. Had Peter known, he could not have suffered the embarrassment.
A second lesson is that anytime we achieve a very great feast with God, we should not be satisfied nor relax; but dig more into God’s presence for more power and revelation, because Satan is busy waiting at the foot of the mountain with his sin trap, ready to capitalize on our ignorance.
As in the case of Peter, ignorance of the will of God concerning His purposes and plans for your present and future life would not only rob you of God’s benefits but also cause you great embarrassment. It may also cause you to be an offense to the very cause you have set for yourself in life. God’s Word is the answer.
If you desire a complete liberation from ignorance, go back to the word of God, the source of true knowledge and power.
The remedy to the sickness of ignorance is available, without cost. Prophet Jeremiah, in Jer. 29:13 says,
“And ye shall seek me and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart”.
