Icelandic Feast
When I travel abroad I also like to try the traditional dishes. So here we are tonight in downtown Reykjavik at the Icelandic Bar
A close-up of the whale main course I had.
A drink before the meal at the Session Craft Bar on Rainbow Street.
This centrally located eatery takes no bookings so the only way in is turning up a bit earlier than you wish to be sat down dining.
You then join their waiting list and hope that you don’t actually have to wait the maximum of forty minutes.
We certainly didn’t as we got seated in twenty minutes more or less.
When you look around you see that mostly tourists, both local and international, are actually those keen on dining here.
It is because this is one of the few restaurants in town that serve puffin and whale meat, lobster dog and of course the fermented shark which I still have a pot of in the fridge.
I was torn between so many dishes listed on their menu.
I did order the hot puffin starter, thin slices of this bird’s meat which taste really gamey, like venison, on a crepe, served with blueberries.
I chose the whale as a main course that came with large onion rings and plenty of rocket salad, all on a bed of buttery chunky potato mash.
The whale is something that pretty much just the tourists eat nowadays here in Iceland.
But as pretty soon the whale meat will not be available anywhere I thought why not try some tonight. It is like surf and turf really.
It must be served rare and it leaves you a fishy aftertaste.
Other than the more unusual meats here and despite how busy this place is the service is quite good. The drinks came nearly right away, followed by the starter, then the main course.
The menu also changes so when I’m in town next I’ll definitely pop in here again for a delicious one of a kind meal.

You sound just like me, trying out local dishes is a must.
BUT I said no to one dish... 100 years old egg in Thailand!
That smell! I just could not stomach it.
PS: South Africa is calling you! (•ิ‿•ิ)
I also like to try local food when traveling. In South Africa, what dishes can or should we try during food travel?
Can you write about them? By the way, are you participating in the @mister-omortson competition?
Umh... not sure if you know that South Africa is referred to as the "rainbow nation". This due to the variety of different cultures. Each culture also have it's own traditional food. As a Afrikaner, from my side there are three things, koeksisters, melktert en biltong! For sure!
I will write a post about them in the near future (•ิ‿•ิ)
Lastly, nope I am not but I will check it out.
Thank you for telling me.
👍👍👍
Oh dear 😱 I’ve been to Thailand but this is the first time I hear about this egg, maybe hard-boiled 🤔 My family and I had a holiday booked to South Africa which unfortunately got cancelled due to Covid in 2021. We re-booked it to the start of 2022 when it got cancelled again for the same reason. Then we just changed the destination and went to Canada last year.
Awh that is such a pity!
South Africa is a beautiful country and I do hope that it is still on your family's bucket list.
One condition, you must let me know if you ever come to South Africa. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Looks so tasty. My appetite is officially open...
You always surprise me with that magnificent gastronomy that is relieved with your photographic art. Seeing the empty plate where only the lamb bone remained tells me that it was a success, an unforgettable dinner. You always tempt my appetite. Thanks for sharing and I wish you much success.
I see that you have also enjoyed your gastronomic stay in Iceland.
Oh, leg of mutton! Did you eat it with your hands? I usually eat it like that too.
your food looks delicious. photos are also displayed very beautifully. Have a nice day. 😎🍀
