The popularity of gravitational waves is increasing in recent years. It is a bit confusing at a first glance and do not look much important but if you go a little bit dipper into it then it opens a vast door in science.

Gravitational waves are 'ripples' in the fabric of space time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the universe. To understand it you must know what space time is. Einstein combined the words space and time stating that time and space are fundamentally very interlinked with each other and must be termed into same word. Space time works as a fabric to support all the mass in this universe as your bed fabric supports you. When there is some disturbances in the fabric then it gives some sorts of waves called gravitational waves. It is called gravitational waves because gravity also works because of the curvature of space time. You may take the waves like waves from stone thrown in water.

Gravitational waves are produced when there is big events in the universe, such as collision of black hole, explosion of supernova. They spread waves travelling at and speed nearly the speed of light and travel an enormous distances.

This is how space time works

Einstein was the first person to talk about gravitational waves. He had mentioned about gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity. Einstein himself believed that we may never prove the existence of gravitational waves practically because the intensity of waves reaching us (Earth) will be so small to be distinguished. So, how we found it now and why it is being popular now ?

It is because recently LIGO team were able to find out gravitational waves practically. Einstein was right again and many of them who thought Einstein was wrong were hit in their head. LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitaional Waves Observatory) was able to find out the presence of gravitational waves.

How did they found ?

As a wave passes by, it stretches space in one direction. LIGO detected this change using and device called interferometer. It is a 4 kilo meter long device which consists of mirrors and lasers. This device splits a single laser beam into two and sends both beams shooting off perpendicularly to each other. If the beams travel equal distances, bounce off mirrors and come back, the waves that make them up should be alignment when they return. But a passing gravitational waves will disturb the path and the laser beams won't align and it happened. Thus gravitational waves were verified.

Why are gravitational waves important ?

The discovery of gravitational wave is a revolution in itself. We can get valuable information about black holes, their collision, stars, supernova and the most important part is even the waves from the Big Bang is still coming today. We can have valuable information about the origin of universe.
