Vehicle Photography: A Very Dutch Scene
The scene:
Early evening. The backdrop is a medieval church wall in the centre of Enschede, The Netherlands, with a few centuries' worth of bullet holes from long-forgotten wars in it, lit by a flood light for the benefit of mostly absent tourists.
In a spot near a concentration of pubs where parking bicycles is not allowed we find a modern bicycle, kitted out for transporting a child and groceries at the same time, secured with a huge lock to scare away the ever-active bicycle thieves.
Next to it is a casually tossed-away drink container, even though the nearest bin is just a few meters away.

It turned out to be a rather nice photo, even if I say so myself.

This is charming! Although that child seat on the handlebars makes me so nervous! Isn't that the least stable place to put it?
It's strange as an American to imagine living in a place with so much history (and violent history). Sure, we've had a couple of our own wars, but nothing compared to what Europe has seen. And we tend to knock down, rebuild, or pave-over anything that reminds us of the past.
Once you're moving, the front wheel is quite stable. It is not uncommon to see another child in a seat on the back carrier rack as well, plus a basket full of groceries at the front. Accidents rarely happen.
And yes, when somebody from the colonies speaks of "an old building", we usually ask to be more precise. That church wall dates back to about AD 1200. Fairly old 8-).
Our house turns 300 this year, and that's about as old as it gets around here.
An 800 year old church is really something. And it's interesting that no one's ever tried to plaster over the bullet holes.
It's really good isn't it :) How both the anciet bullet holes and the modern soft drink cup in their own way show how people have always had little respect for such things, in place of their own wants and needs...
