Poem: Claiming her territory
Although long ago.
She's had enough.
What more did they expect?
Why did she need to go there again?
Getting dressed for work is like getting ready for a funeral,
The sadness, the heaviness,
But the dead must be buried.
She hears him shouting in the hallway,
Her body tenses,
He enters her room,
Slams the door shut,
She’s afraid.
His face is as red as a wild fox,
The expletives gush from his mouth like stagnant filthy water, spreading………
She is frozen in shock.
He approaches her,
Lifts up his right hand……..
Oh my god, he is going to hit her!
He has lost his mind.
She pulls back in her rolling chair,
He gets closer,
Picks up a marker and writes on the white board.
There is no slap but she is wounded anyway.
She is trembling inside……
He is too close for comfort.
Oh no, it happened again -
Unresolved emotions and trauma, morphed
into night-mares and now "day-mares".
Her dignity chases her out of the office -
Her emotional torture chamber.
She steps outside,
Sees rays of light from the grey heavens.
She envisages a lioness claiming its territory,
It’s up to her now.
She knows it,
She feels it,
She roars.
