Older - wiser, younger - reckless, how true is it?

in #writing7 years ago

How many times have you heard that you are supposed to listen to and obey older people, they have experience, they know better, they are much more informed. And it is true, in a way. Older people have had experiences we have yet to encounter and maybe they have seen something that we will never have the opportunity of experiencing.

But I still have to put that ''but'' in the middle, experience and wiseness doesn't always go hand in hand. I have met kids who are wiser than some of their parents, I have met teenagers who have stronger minds than some of the older human beings. I know, as kids you are constantly reminded that adults know better, you should listen to them, and that is partly true, adults have had more experiences, just like a sixty year old has more experience than a thirty year old, it doesn't mean the first one is wiser than the second.

And aren't those statements, that are saying that we need to listen to adults (that doesn't specify which ones, instead referring to the whole population), make us want to throw our childhoods away and take the reins in our hands? How annoying is it, that because of your age you are judged as more stupid than your peers that are older? Yes, life experience wise, the people walking on this earth longer are smarter, yes, I should listen to that basic advice about relationships and rushed decisions.

But should any of us worship somebody else's beliefs just because of age? Everybody gets wiser with age, that is inevitable, because we gather information all our lives, and our brains have the capacity to store all that information acquired over our lifetime, but... Let's not pretend every person is the same, some are born with much bigger capacity of thinking than others, there are some kids out there that have the brain that is double, tipple and quadruple of mine or any other persons, and those kids are constantly said that all the adults know better, ''he is a grown up, you need to listen to him'', which might not be the case.

Now, I am not talking about respect, I don't mean that you should be mean to somebody just because they are giving you advice, I mean, there are grown people who think they know better than everybody else, no matter the subject, if it is spiritual, in life experience or about occupation. And there are people who damage the young, brilliant souls by making them confused. A child's mind is easy to affect, I mean look at adults, even we get offended easily, how do you think it affects the little ones?

In school teachers are the authority. Who doesn't remember the one time the teacher was wrong? What was their reaction? At least half of the times they will argue you without even considering that you may be right, because they are the authority, they must always be right, it is not like people make mistakes (subtle irony here). As children we are taught that adults can't be wrong, we are thought to accept what the authority says without a doubt.

My point is, don't push somebodies brilliance down just because they are six or twelve or nineteen years old, it has been proven time over time that there are geniuses in the world, some kids are smarter than you, and some youths know better about how the world should be. And I know, in your time it was different, but times change, there are no benefits in huge egos and being stuck in times long gone.

I wish you the best day, week and life,

Sort:

There is a tendency not to change radically from your teenage self. If your were foolish at 19, you will be wiser at 49 but you were building from a low base

That is kind of the point I am trying to make :D

As I grew up i noticed the adults were not as wise and have it all figured out as I thought. Now as an adult I understand we just know how to fake it more, we're more used to the system and know the steps to take to conform. That doesn't make anyone wiser or smarter, just more used to how to navigate the system.

Life experience can't be discounted, but wisdom goes well beyond it.

Yes, we fake it for everybody, I have no idea what I am doing... :D

@lindawas kudos for picking such a topic. We sadly live in a society where communication is a one way process.

We are too scared to fall that we take paths followed to be right. It's perfectly fine to have our share of falls before making it right

Wisdom gained over the years certainly can help, but definitely doesn't automatically imply "wisdom". That depends more on how open-minded people are to new ideas and different perspectives.

Also thought you may appreciate these two posts:

Critical thinking that leads a person to question his immediate surroundings takes place in less than 10% of the population. It has long been recognized that education today seems more about indoctrination.

Link: Why Less than 10% Make Change Happen

My post about a great TED-Talk by former professor Ken Robinson: Do schools kill creativity?

Oh, thank you for the links!

that ted talk is perhaps the best one ever, it's certainly always up there on the lists.
for good reason

but the first post that you linked is worthy of further debate.
I think it is sort of right, but makes sweeping generalisations, which don't stand up to the slightest scrutiny.

which makes it wrong, unfortunately, even though the message is good. The facts are wrong

That's true. I think unconditionally following someone or listening someone is the reason behind some of the greatest problems in the world. Every kid should be encouraged to question! This way people will be more reasonable and keep away from following blind faith.

Yes, that is what bothers me, kids are put in environments that discourage thinking but encourage blind following.

I'll be the old person who comes on to say, you need the balance.

You must be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Some older people show a level of ignorance that is truly frightening, but so do some young people.

It is not about age.

The only thing age gives us, those of us lucky enough to continue here that is, is that you simply have had more chances to fail.

and failure is where we learn, if indeed we want to learn.

These failures can be fatal, that why not everyone makes it to old age.

no-one here gets out alive.
As Jim Morrison pointed out.

I myself am only at old age's door, but I can finally see what it has to offer.

much love and may you grow old gracefully, when the time comes.

Yes, I totally agree, age is just a number, there are ignorant people in all ages, that is why I think, even though you should show respect to your elders, take everything anyone says with a grain of salt, use your own head!
And failures are the best learning experiences, because nobody wants to get burned twice.

Thank you :)

you are very welcome.

beautiful post, thx for sharing!

Thanks for reading :)

Great post. I am mid fifties very wise in some ways and a complete idiot in others.

Yes, we all have our smarts and our awkwards :D

Right that we can learn or at least pick up something from others' experiences. :)

Yes, experiences shouldn't be ignored.
