TreeTuesday - An (old) olive tree in its natural habitat

Hello!!

If you noticed my last TreeTuesday you've seen olive trees (Olea europaea) in a planter (TreeTuesday - Trimmed trees in barrels).

Today I share an olive tree in its native habitat...but it's an old one, more than 800 years!!
Did you know olive trees only grow in the Mediterranean climate? And they can last many years, as you may see...

In Portuguese we say this is a "zambujeiro" the wild variety of the olive tree, not explored to produce olives or olive oil.

Due to its age, it has a large hole in the trunk...

...and strange forms

sometimes people try to climb it,

or like me, just want to sit on it!!

If you are wondering about my cool bag, yes, I use it as maximum as I can, publicising our amazing SteemFest!

I still have 2/3 pending posts about my experience on SteemFest, that will be released as soon as I can manage time in this "new life"!

This is my (late) submission to #TreeTuesday by @old-guy-photos, a great initiative to encourage us to share some of our most precious tree photos and/or stories.

Awesome tree indeed! It's nice to watch kids playing around it.

Actually a nice and old tree!
Congratz :D

Wonderful characterful old tree. 😀

Very impressive Olive tree. 800 years Wow. Is the tree on private land and is it one of the oldest in the area? Love the color of olive.

Yes and yes! This is in a private land (that can be visited) and is the oldest one in the area (at least that was told to us).

Lucky for you to be able to see and photo this massive ancient beauty.

:) sometimes I'm fortunate to find these preciosities, but I'm attentive to nature, so it's easy too! :)

What stories that tree could tell!! It looks dangerous though with the split in the middle and I would think it would be prone to disease??? I always feel sad when I see trees on their last legs.

Olive trees grow here too - Russian olives....I really like the color of them. They don't grow fruit though, they are just a bush kind of tree.

Olive trees tend to create strange shapes when getting old, even opening holes in the trunk or in the base. My mum owns a few old olive trees, but they were cut a few years ago for wood, but they re-sprout, don't worry!

I never heard about russian oilves, and after a search I found that its common name comes from its similarity in appearance to the olive (Olea europaea), I also found that is now also established in North America, being invasive in some parts (https://www.invasive.org/browse/subinfo.cfm?sub=3022).

Yes it can be invasive.....it's always the way when a plant is displaced. That's interesting that the dead tree resprouts.

It can happen, but not to all. I always think of potatoes and tomatoes that aren't native from Europe and they aren't a problem. But what you say is right, it's better to prevent and not displace species!! In what concerns to the olive cut, it's not killing the tree, it's a kind of pruning that can be done in the top of the trunk or in the base, with the purpose of getting new wood.

We have them out here Long Island NY, Russian olive, They get into abandon fields and make them impenetrable.

That seems very invasive behave...Do you know if there is some entity controlling it?! I should search more about what is being done in USA in what concerns to invasive plants control...(but not today!!)

Bom post!! Ainda por cima sendo a cerca de uma arvore que ja faz parte da nossa identidade lusitana!
É muito bom ver mais portugueses neste cantinho da net!! 😁
Cumprimentos!!

That is an old tree with such character. It's amazing how they can continue to produce for so many years. When I lived in Tucson, Arizona, I picked ripe black olives from the trees on the University campus. They made such great olives, with garlic and lemon. Most people just got upset at the olives falling on the sidewalk, lol.

Ahah, that is funny! Olive oil is my favorite fat, I use it everytime I cook!

I like to cook with olive oil, too. It's my favorite oil. In the stores, I've started seeing olive oil from California, so it's nice to have some that is more regional for us here in Oregon.

What an incredible tree! It is huge!! 800 years...that is amazing!

That's right!! As the guide told us, this was the oldest tree in the area!! We must feel respect for it!:)

Actually a nice tree! very excellent

Apparently this tree has seen a lot in life. It looks like a hero. So many wounds and injuries, but it still bears fruit and grows up!

It shows a lesson to us, doesn't it?!
