Iceland soon using more electricity mining bitcoin than powering homes
Bitcoin mining on Iceland seems to be booming. South China Morning Post reports that bitcoin mining on Iceland may soon use more electricity than it uses to power homes. An Icelandic energy expert estimates Iceland's current bitcoin mining operations use around 840 gigawatt hours of electricity each year. Most of the country's homes uses around 700 gigawatt hours. This is pretty insane, and it will be interesting to see how things develop and how the power companies plan to solve this.
Reason for bitcoin mining on Iceland is so popular is the cheap energy and fast Internet connections. Icelands cold climate also plays a role.
