Freewrite on writing!
Hey, Steemit! It’s been a while since I did an aimless freewrite. Truth be told, these are some of my favorite posts I contribute to my blog. They’re directionless, and they give me an opportunity to vent. On nights like this, @vermillionfox and @guthrie are sound asleep. Sometimes, after midnight, I get manic and that lends itself well to the creative process. Steemit is an outlet for those episodes, and it keeps me writing. It’s like a warm up exercise. The only problem is, that warm up tends to happen late at night. I’m going to try and keep this one relatively brief because I do want to work on the novel project.
My latest obsession has been the writing, but I haven’t had the chance to do much of it. I’ve been thinking about it constantly. One of the things I love about this novel idea […two, actually], is that I committed to doing them at the same time as @lovejoy decided to do his own. This lead to a friendly wager with the initial deadline for a first draft coming this June. Writing a novel is completely new for us, and it’s something we both admitted we’ve always wanted to accomplish. Likewise, it’s something I’m sure we’re both equally unfamiliar with as far as a personal process. I sent him a text this week to remind him we have 177 days left.
His response was about how much of writing is about what you don’t say, and that makes a lot of sense. Everything for me now is world building, character development and plot structure and continuity. Much of that is in my head, and in my notes app, across my phone, iPad and Mac. It’s like I’m just filling the table with thousands of puzzle pieces and eventually, I’m going to put them together. The reality is, though, I have until June 30th to put them together, and I can already feeling that deadline encroaching on me. That’s a good thing, because without a deadline, neither of us will finish a first draft.
Another obsession I’m on, and it relates to writing, is a solution to finding my own discipline in writing. This is something I’d love to sit down with @ericvancewalton, @ezzy or @tarazkp and talk about. When I took a serious crack at comics, I imagined it’d be easy because I could illustrate something that looks “good”. I’ve done it my whole life. I found that storytelling and speed where skills also required to be a comic book artist, and I didn’t have them at all. In writing, I’m struggling to find my own process. The connected laptop, for me at least, is turning out to be more of a hinderance than a help.
If you get a minute, watch this lecture with Will Self. The entire lecture is fantastic, as are most of his lectures […I find him to be quite an asshole, but the kind that’s self-aware and gets a pass because he’s so spot on]. Pick it up at 32:00 minutes with the writer including a Morris traveler in her novel, and how that novel was never written. I’m trying to find a solution to capture the essence of what makes my Kindle Paperwhite such an incredible experience for reading, but in a writing form. I want an e-ink screen and a bluetooth keyboard. That’s it. @mada sits at @caffetto writing his novels on paper, and though that’s not the approach for me personally, I see exactly why he does it.
Well, I could continue ranting about this, but I’m going to stop myself so I can, in fact, add some more to either of these books. I spend all day maneuvering menial tasks and errands, thinking to myself, “I can’t wait till I get home and things are quiet so I can finally write.” This is my time to write, so I’m going to post this and do just that before I get too sleepy. I’ll leave you with an excerpt; a prologue from the Lovecraftian horror story I’m writing with @ghostfish. Just something to give a sense of the world, and to prove that I am actually writing. Thanks for reading!
“The community of Christians shall have no association with those who remain in disobedience and a spirit of rebellion against God. There can be no fellowship with the wicked in the world.”
—Schleitheim Confession
1685. The Puritans of Hull, gripped by pestilence and famine, cling to their faith. Save Shadenfreud, the self appointed community’s leader of Hull, fulfilling his promise to cleanse the human spirit, put to death three sisters known as Oiguina by the Wampanoag people. Drowned at Save’s hand, the Black Sachem sisters cursed the townspeople with their dying breath.
As Puritan life, already a testament of will, became unlivable for the Puritains of Hull, the curse of Oiguina reclaimed the life, water and land that was taken from them. Rot overtook the crops as the soil and wells were poisoned by the witches’ final asperity. Starvation, unnatural parasites and desperation consumed the population of Hull; all but one.
The Good Shepard, Save Shadenfreud lived a comfortable life, hoarding the resources of his community. As hunger and sickness took the young and old, those that remained fixed blame for the curse of Hull on Save. Finally, lead by the emboldened pastor Lovejoy, the town massed, marching on The Good Shephard’s home.
Skinny bodies carrying torches and farm tools chanted “Cleanse the soul”, as they gathered at the door. Their eyes wild and bellies aching, as the bovine Save nervously peered from the window. Pastor Lovejoy presides over a salivating horde of followers. Save cried for mercy, held to wood of the dining room table by dozens of emaciated, malignant souls.
This was the night of The Feast. With crude blades, the fatty flesh of Save Shadenfreud was carved away as he writhed, powerless. As the pain began to dull, he could only hear the sounds of gluttonous mouths pulling, chewing and swallowing. Darkness washed over Save, and in his last moments of consciousness, he quietly spoke the words, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them.”
I am so happy that you joined the Freewriters. Btw, there are several of us who have written a novel by using the daily prompt to move the story forward. Good luck!
That's great, @mariannewest. Is the daily prompt another Community? Point me in the right direction because I'm not familiar with it. Thanks for the comment!
The daily prompt is what got the Freewriters Community started and also the @freewritehouse. Since I started it on my blog, I keep publishing it there every day. We are at day 812 right now. :)

I usually publish around 7 am Pacific time.
On Saturdays(my Saturday), we mix things up a bit and people have the choice of any previous prompt or to write one story with three prompts that are revealed separately. The idea is that you don't know what the next prompt will be and pivot the writing to it.
The last two years, we did November madness and March Madness. For NovemberMadness, we used NaNoWriMo as our word counter and the daily prompt to bring the story forward. The goal was to write 50,000 words in one month. Several ended up with a novel they published after editing of course.
Please do check in on my profile any time you feel like writing - the prompt also shows up in the community if you want to find it there.
Hi Lars, i think midnight is the right time to write. You are a very talented writer. Writing will be the hard thing for someone that doesn't have the talent in writing. I think it's very appropriate when you sit down with famous writers like @ericvancewalton. It will add to your experience in writing. Have a nice day, sir.
Yeah. It's great. I love having the time to myself and no interruptions. Even texts because everyone is asleep. Working on that get together with @ericvancewalton. We're in the same city. I think he's on holiday right now. Thanks for the comment, @elianaelisma!
We should plan to get together or do a FaceTime/Zoom call to discuss strategies. One think I had to do when working on Alarm Clock Dawn was scheduling writing times as I would an appointment. I always would silence my phone and disconnect the laptop from Wifi so there were no temptations to hop online or be interrupted by messages. The key, once you sit down is limiting interruption, it takes around 15-20 minutes to refocus once you've been derailed. I'm about to jump into another novel myself this year. I feel like I'm heading off to boot camp again. : )
I'd love that, @ericvancewalton! What's the best way to get in touch? Discord? Keybase? We can always do an 11:00a.m. Friday at Gorkha for the lunch buffet. I still have a month or so without any travel scheduled.
That's exactly what I'm discovering. The biggest obstacle is myself, and I'm in the discipline phase right now. Scheduling times to write. It's tough because I have a son, and @vermillionfox to keep me company, but they're usually both gone during the mornings and afternoons in four days a week. The connected device is a problem for me as well [...again, back to discipline]. I'm working on a horror story that's part of the Lovecraft mythos, that takes place in the late 1880's. I find myself Googling things like "...did Puritans have springs in their beds?", and before I know it, I haven't actually written for an hour.
I'm getting better about allowing freeform stream of consciousness writing to happen, but it's still a challenge. My attempt to correct this is a very "first world" solution [...which I'm aware of]. I bought this Boox Nova Pro. It's about an 8" e-ink tablet running Android. It can connect to a Bluetooth keyboard. It does have WiFi, but from everything I read, the browser experience is SO bad, you wouldn't want to use it unless it was an emergency. I'm going to try and bring this [...and only this setup] to the coffee shop next week and see if it's a good experience.
I was amazed at how much I fell in love with my Kindle Paperwhite. Initially, I couldn't understand what people saw in those devices, until I bought one and realized the LACK of notifications, features and stimulation is what made it so great. Everything gets out of the way and you can just read. I'm hoping this'll be a similar experience, but from a writing point of view. I'll most likely do an entire Steemit post on how it goes.
I'd love to get together, man. If you're on Discord, my username is kommienezuspadt#6545 and on Keybase, I'm just kommienezuspadt!
Discord is probably best, my username is ericvancewalton#4931. I'm sure we'll be able to get together before you leave in a month. We're planning on doing an extensive road trip but, if we do, it probably won't be for a few weeks. No matter what we can always do a video chat if in-person doesn't end up working out.
The Boox device sounds like a decent solution! I can't wait to hear about your experience with it. Completing a work of long-fiction is really like a journey of self-discovery, isn't it? I've had the sequel to Alarm Clock Dawn (Truth Is Stranger) about 75% done for years but have been preoccupied with other things since 2017. I'm going to dive into it this year with the aim of getting it done.
I'll send you my mobile number via Discord and hopefully we can synch up soon! Take care, Lars and stay warm!
Eric! So good to see you in this post 💙 I need to chat with you soon after your holidays. Enjoy every minute....I actually sent a WhatsApp message but it seems you changed your number. Dive into the ocean for me. Still in the middle of Austrian winter.

The novel project !!!??
That sounds cool and the deadline sounds like a good idea. I had 2 puppy love novel published when I was in high school. That was quite fun! Enjoy the writing and I hope it's coming along well! :)))
Yeah! I want to read your puppy love novel, @waybeyondpadthai! It's going to be gruesome when it's done. It's a Lovecraftian horror story. I'm having a great time writing it.
the silence always inspires writing time.
I think you will put out a good novel to read.
I look forward to it, friend
Thanks for this My friend

Incredible to find you and read half of your story. I will continue tomorrow because it’s 5am and I better end my manic phase.
It’s all I needed that I can smile again. I don’t feel “alone”. That simple! 🥰
It’s truly interesting how the universe operates and things fly into your face the moment you pinpoint your wishes, ideas as well as worries.
This last year was total madness in all ways and I didn’t have much of a clear mind to get anything done other than getting rid of breast cancer and having as much fun as possible, running around like a wild teenager. I had no discipline to write proper posts as I used to do.
I was burnt out but now I am back! Oh well....Maybe 😂
I am sorry about finances you deal with but past 2 years were brutal in the crypto market for all
of us. It has to change! It will....

The idea of writing a book was floating around my brain cells For a long time but other than thinking about the storyline I couldn’t organize my mind.
I don’t give up and all I try to say : I wish you good luck and follow up in your progress 🙌
I just saw your inspiring conversation with @ericvancewalton after writing my comment
and once again in “Awwww” how energies are connected.
We chatted about the flower of life symbol the other day :) Here we go Eric ! It’s like an amazing miracle....more after your holidays 🙏💥
