Are You Optimizing Your Leased Steem Power?
I read a post the other day about how much a user had earned from the Steem Power he/she leased and I was very shocked to discover that the user was earning far less from his leased SP compared to what I was earning and that the user also had almost twice more SP than I had. I checked out the user’s blog and did some analysis on steemworld.org just to discover that the user was not optimizing the use of his/her leased SP.
I have seen a lot of comments that insinuate that leasing Steem Power is a waste of time and resources. Now you ask yourself this question, if you had just 20SP and by chance you are given 80 SP, would you power it up so that your total SP becomes 100SP and when you upvote with 100% Voting Power it rewards the receiver with $0.00 or would you lease Steem Power about 5000 SP for 4 weeks which gives the receiver an upvote worth about $0.13?
My point with this post is not to choose for you how you want to grow your Steem Power but rather to help members that choose to lease Steem Power to know that they can make more from the leased SP by optimizing the use of their SP in other to get better returns on them. The post is also useful to those who have loads of SP just sitting in their account and not doing much for them.
This is in no way a financial advice, do your own research before taking any decision you want to take. Thanks.
What Is Steem Power?
According to the definition on our Steemit dashboard - “STEEM POWER Influence tokens which give you more control over post payouts and allow you to earn on curation rewards”. That means the Steem Power you have influences how much your upvotes are worth based on the Voting Power you used to upvote the post or comment.
Why Do You Lease Steem Power?
There are many reasons why members lease Steem Power but I think the main objective is to have the power to operate on a higher level. I will like to list some of the reasons why members lease Steem Power but my focus will be on members that are blogging daily and not on members that just lease Steem Power and setup vote selling.
Reasons Why Members Lease Steem Power:
Ability to upvote post or comment with higher reward value.
Receive higher rewards through curation.
Grow your account faster.
If you network a lot within the community it means you can grow your followership based. It is natural for people to start following people that give them meaningful upvotes on their post or comment.
You also receive a lot of upvotes because it is logical for members to upvote your post or comments if you are doing the same to them.
You tend to earn more and gain greater visibility on the trending pages because you receive a lot of upvotes means you earning go up and as more people see your post on the trending pages they checkout your post which can lead to additional followers, comments, upvotes or even resteems.
It helps boost your self upvotes to your post too.
It helps increase your Reputation on the blockchain.
You are able to upvote more users with valuable upvotes than you would if you didn’t lease Steem Power.
It commands more respect.
Optimizing Your Leased Steem Power
Optimizing your leased Steem Power simply means making the most of the leased Steem Power you paid for. In doing that you need to understand how your Voting Power works. By default I believe our Voting Power gets replenished by 20% every 24 hours. Now, if in the 24 hours you only use 10% of your Voting Power to upvote users posts and comment it means you have wasted 10% of your Voting Power for that day and in effect, your Steem Power was only put to work at a rate of 50%.
The timing of our voting determines what we earn from curation. I am not an expert on this so you you’ve got to do more research on this. But know this, when you upvote a post can determine if you’re 100%, 50% or less share of 25% curation rewards for that post. For me I stick within the 13 to 15 minutes range.
Don’t be deceived into thinking that you will earn more from upvoting a post that has 1300 upvotes with an upvote value of $250. You’ll earn more from a post that has 15 upvotes and an upvote value of $5. Let me explain further, in the first example 25% of $250 gives us $62.5 to be shared among the upvoters, divided that with 1,300 upvoters means each person gets $0.048 in curation reward. In the second example 25% of 5 gives us 1.25, divide that with 15 gives us $0.083 in curation rewards. So you see you earn more from upvoting the second person than upvoting the first person. But remember that there are loads of factors that come into play while calculating curation rewards as timing of your upvote and the voting weight you used to upvote the post or comment.
We are very lucky to have a platform that provides us with the tools that can help us optimize our leased Steem Power and they are the autovoting tools. We have Steemauto.com by @mahdiyari, steemrewarding.com by @holger80 and others. With them you can setup the criteria for upvoting your fans and set stop upvote limits for your Voting Power. This means that you will automatically be upvoting members constantly which mean your replenished VP is regained as well in a way that you utilized more than 90% of your VP daily which in turn means you used your leased SP to the maximum.
This Is Social Network Platform So Socialize
I don’t know what your purpose of Steemit is, but know that it is a social network platform so in effect you need to socialize with other members. Sometimes somebody follows me, I check out the person to follow back but discover that that user has been on this platform for more than a year and hasn’t made any post. They don’t comment of users post and their SP is sometimes below 15 SP. I have a friend that joined Steemit and went and followed all the accounts that had huge SP thinking if they followed him back and upvoted his post by even 1% he’ll be a made-man. Lol. He soon discovered that 80% of the users he was following even though they had been on Steemit more than a year had never made a post, they only powered up and either leased their SP or were selling upvotes.
You need to start connecting with people that share the same interest as you. Fortunately, the platform has loads of communities that support their members in various ways, in those communities you are also able to makes friends and exchange upvotes with fellow members. One such community I belong to is called @upvotebuilders, we delegate to the community pool and receive upvotes based on our membership levels. You can read more about the group by clicking the link below;

There are also great Dapps that help you socialize of the Steem Blockchain one of which is the @actifit Dapp which rewards you for reporting your daily activity. If you haven’t already joined it you can do so by clicking my affiliate link below;

We both get rewarded when you join today and remember you can use your AFIT tokens to exchange for upvotes.
There are many more apps and communities I’ll like to mention if I had the luxury of time, you can however find them before the close of my post. The importance of socializing when it comes to optimizing the use of your leased Steem Power is because it gives you a list of people you can be upvoting regularly and be sure they too will be upvoting you too. Joining @Actifit means the exchange of upvotes will be daily. Upvoting users who post once a week or twice a month is not going to be effective for you because your leased SP is time based.
In Conclusion
Your Steem Power has a lot of influence you cannot even imagine, leasing Steem Power has its benefits and it is only if you optimize its use will you reap the benefits there off, otherwise it will just be a sleeping giant but in this case the sleeping giant expires.

Excellent review @ketcom and of course I know what the SP is, but your observations made me think better about this question!
That is nice to know. Thanks for reading.

Super interesting! I think I remember hearing about leased SP, but I don’t remember for sure. There are so many “squirrels” on Steem. By that I mean there are so many interesting, fun, attention-grabbing posts, ideas, communities, projects, opportunities and methods that even when I’m trying to learn one thing, something else pops into view and I am immediately distracted. But thank you for this! I just learned another thing. It never ends, this Steem learning curve!
