Looks Like I'll Be Leaving China This Summer...

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Told my boss that I will not be renewing my contract for the next school year.

I've been here for five years and had a great time. I'm just thinking long term and realized there are more adventures to be had. I definitely spent my fair share of time in China but I think it's time to move on. I am a mechanical engineer by education so perhaps there are opportunities for me in Europe or back in Canada that I would like.

I would absolutely love to live in Taiwan or maybe even Japan but the teaching jobs in Taiwan arent nearly as good as China.

I feel a little nervous about the whole ordeal but I'd say I'm fairly well educated and I am sure there is something else I could do besides teaching in China. You can't become a permanent resident in China and the whole internet situation is starting to annoy me.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?!

Where do you think I could go next? Germany? Switzerland? Japan? Taiwan? Somewhere else?

I could be a teacher, engineer, entrepreneur or anything else you'd think I'd be suitable for!

I'd love to hear your guy's thoughts!

If you can take some time to travel (like 3 months or more) I would suggest doing that, don't stay in one place too long unless you want to settle.

If I was in your position, I'd try another continent, like South America, Australia, etc.

Go as far as you can for as long as you can.

You only live once.

Will you have a going away party?

Thatd be cool eh?

There is a lot to see and i really like Asia. I think south america is definitely worth checking out. Argentina and Chile look really good.

Im not sure about the going away party. I havent broken the news to my students but we go out so often that we will probably do something together before leaving. I have this underlying anxiety about leaving but I think it is time to be back somewhere that doesnt have censored internet and other nonsense.

There will be some sort of nonsense almost anywhere, everything is a trade off. Either your cost of living will be high, or you have to put up with other limitations of some kind.

Its best to go out and see places in person, without any serious expectations, before making any commitments.

Some anxiety is normal, no reason to burn any bridges either, you could probably come back to visit China if you missed it.

Yeah for sure. The options are there. In fact, the low cost of living and good job was making up for the problems i had in china which i why i stayed so long.

Time to start exploring again.

I am thinking of Japan.

What do you want to do over there?

I personally would like to explore the temples, the alleys and the street food. But for you, well, you can teach EFL students over there :) while also enjoying things I mentioned. Though, I've never been to Japan, it is one of a special place for me.

I wouldnt mind Japan at all. The only thing that concerns me is the cost of living. I feel like im getting ripped off if i can live in a similar sized apartment for a third of the cost in another country
