How to attract and retain new users to steemit? A red fish's opinion.

in #abuse6 years ago (edited)

I am pretty certain, everyone, young or old, has either read an article about steemit abuse/steemit user growth and/or thought about it. I have seen a few posts lately on this from @steevc - #nobidbot tag or #adoptaminnow strategy, and then i saw an article today from @paulag that talked about how low steem prices are actually good to weed the crap out of steemit. If you also go through the comments of these posts, you will see varied opinions from steemit heavyweigts.

Important to first discuss, is what puts people, new to steemit such as me, off and what is abuse? Now, different people may have different views about what they consider abuse but i think its safe to say that ultimately is boils down to fair distribution of the steemit reward pool.

Now, lately, i experienced the force of a certain Mr. H on steemit, who is famous and infamous for the same thing - famous for making money and infamous for making disproportionately more money. His strategy is self upvotes. Then there are others like this post below, that don't make a lot of money but deserve 0 payout for 0 effort -

https://steemit.com/life/@robinson18/heyy-steemian

So to me, defining abuse is simply linked to 2 factors - effort and reward and steemit needs effort adjusted rewards, like risk adjusted returns in finance.

I don't have a suggestion on how to code the above. May be get a numerical score based on number of words, no plagiarism, no downvotes (in case the post is just random words put together) and then have 50% payout based on that and 50% based on upvotes. Not sure if anything can be done to change the way rewards are distributed but may be if one is talking about one account/one vote, then one can talk about a better reward system than a copy of democracy, because lets face it, democracy isn't perfect.

Attracting users to steemit isnt a problem. Whether one creates content, or interacts, everyone's 2 cents is worth the 2 cents (may be more) so attracting users to steemit isn't a problem. There is a winning formula in place. Improve the UI and user seduction will improve dramatically.

Problems that new users face, and what impacts user rerention is, finding an audience or not knowing what to do when one first joins. Most new users come with the idea of making money. Steemit also isnt big enough yet that it can be selective in terms of getting quality bloggers in and not worry about others. It is still a closed platform. Most of the audience for most bloggers are other steemians. Therefore the site needs to benefit both content creators and upvoters.

For a curator who has recently joined, the trending page us useless. The posts are too old for the new curator to make any money and the original poster has little interest in educating/interacting with new users. New users also lack the steemit 'etiquette' to not ask for upvotes. But who is telling them what they should be doing instead? The answer is no one. I have seen plenty of people complaining about spam comment makers but i have not seen anyone educating these rep 25 guys (that could also be because of me following too few people or having been on steemit for a small time, so no one should feel offended).

Next are new content creators. Bullet point suggestions here -

  1. New users should immediately be assigned a mentor of sorts that they can ask questions, as stupid as they may be.
  2. Bid bots are a problem, they are not profitable, as i have read in other posts and they allow people to be lazy and compromise on quality. They encourage new users to go that route.
  3. I like the idea of #nobidbots section - credit to @steevc
  4. Steemcleaners needs to be improved, or may be not. I reported 3 articles to @steemcleaners today. Now i dont know whether they will consider what i suggested as spam or not but there needs to be faster, better way to judge this in case of 0 effort articles. Will a post from people compiling 10 such articles a day help? I see lots of people posting crypto news articles daily (also spam posts). So how about a post with spam posts. Over time, the process can be fine tuned anyway.

Sorry, last bullet point was more than a bullet point.

So yeah, that's what a red fish like me thinks. May be problems faced by new users are best described by new users themselves. Let me know what you guys think - do i make sense? Are my suggestions worthy of your 2 cents?

Sort:

glad you got your standing back! Way to fight the power! Good article, I follow a lot of this because I was given that advice by you and a few others.

Well it was only thanks to the steemit community. If you are interested, have a look at the comments section of my posts that got wiped out. Most people who helped me are there.

Glad you liked the article. In case you are on the lookout for new content creators to follow, i usually will tag people, ie in case you have not come across them already.

Their content will have a lot more discussion going on between people truly interested in improving steemit.

I looked the other day, it looks like there are quite a few people that supported you. I appreciate that there are many good people looking out.

Interesting points.

Sometimes we are so use to other platforms, steem seems like a different and unfamiliar place.

But the reality is, if you're on twitter or Facebook and posting all day long. You're not going to make a penny. So steem is better, but there's no free lunch.

When I joined twitter, I had to make an effort to create my own network, find people to follow and engage with my followers. Maybe that was a good training ground for steem.

Unlike Facebook where you can just turn up and have your current social network replicated, steem, like twitter, requires effort and engagement.

There is no silver bullet. We all need to act together to make steem a better place to be.

Think of it this way, how many other blockchains actually has a real user base and not just speculation? Just for a few bits of content, you're earning steem which if you power up, you can have a bigger say on who gets a payout.

I agree with all your points. I am not of the opinion steemit is a bad site. However, I wanted to write about what i had read lately, which was to make this awesome site more awesome.

There's no denying there are payouts, and that's why i think the USP to attract new users is there. forget content, even if one comments, there's a payout so steemit is a game changer. Also agree, that we have a fully functional blockchain with daily active users.

However the above positives, cannot cover the negatives. Knowing that there are all these positives, how does one tackle what may be impediments to future growth.

i see you are at 41. given that there are 5 days to go, I will probably lose the contest.

I do like the way comments can get rewarded. Maybe a trending page based on comments and value of votes on comments would be interesting!

As for the reputation score, I am not counting my chickens just yet. Did my daily @flagtarget flags... So who knows what will happen!

That's also a very good idea. May be that ways users can get to interesting content, since usually on paid content, comments rarely get upvoted.

Haha, yeah, he will first finish his posts, then start flagging.

I think comments should automatically earn some amount of SP. Additionally, I feel that comments that are upvoted by the OP should get greater portions of the curation.

I don't know why but i seem to be missing out on comments, did not realize you commented till i just randomly decided to view the post again in detail.

I dont know if all comments can earn SP, specially ones that are 0 effort. Or yeah may be link this to what you also suggested, if the author upvotes then automatically give 1 cent worth of SP. Definitely an idea worth looking into.

Now i know, your comment was a direct reply to kabir's which is why i didn't realize.

Great post @karamyog

In my opinion the biggest problem (that makes people leave steemit) is the fact that many of us are being attracted by "power users" who are claiming that this platform can make you rich.

People see posts in trending making solid $$$ and they think that it's really place full of financial opportunities. They dont know yet that all trending page is fake and pumped with bots.

With time they learn all that painful lesson and they leave.

Once again: great post

Piotr

Thanks for the kind words mate and what you've stated is spot on. I myself went through the same learning curve. Dissappointment at first, but realized that effort has to be put in to realize any rewards, and even for that, one needs time and patience.

Trending page is such a sham!

good morning @karamyog

So we're on the same page here.

The truth is that Steemit is a great place if you want to make valuable connections with other people from same industry. Especially if this industry is crypto related. That's why I decided to be present here in the first place.

Making $$$ directly by posting, voting etc - it's gonna work only for those who are already rich and can self-vote themself within circle of rich whales.

Yours
Piotr
