The Gifted Epsiode 1 - eXposed
To be perfectly candid I am a big fan of comic book movies. I’ve never really read comics but I did collect them as a kid. So when a certain property strays outside of the comic book cannon not only do I not care I really wouldn’t even know unless I read about it online. As for comic book TV shows I’ve been slower on the uptake. Of course I’m not including the Netflix shows here because they are on an entirely different level of awesome. As for regular TV shows I can’t stand The Arrow, I gave Supergirl a chance but the second season turned me off. And although I really want to like Agents of Shield the quality from season to season is just so variable. For some odd reason I do like the Flash and the first season of Heroes might be one of the best seasons of television ever.

So needless to say I was interested in seeing what The Gifted was going to offer. Not only is it a new superhero property but Bryan Singer is involved and I really like his work. To me The Usual Suspects is one of my all time favorite films and his original X-Men pretty much rekindled serious interest in superhero movies. I mean really he gave us Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. What genius casting. It’s like Heath Ledger as the Joker. No one thought it would work but after their performances no one else can fill those shoes.

Anyway I couldn’t get into the Pilot episode of The Gifted. It all seemed so contrived and so borrowed from other sources. I get that most things now have been done before. But it’s still possible to make it feel fresh. This show didn’t feel fresh at all. We have the Heroes style cheerleader girl whose dad is working against the mutants as he’s unaware his daughter is one. Then there’s the kid who goes all Carrie at the high school dance when people are picking on him. You got Sentinel Services who they ought to have just been called what they are, the ATCU from Agents of Shield. And you got the mutant underground aka Daisy Johnson helping inhumans get away from the ATCU to live a normal life.

In all reality I’d have just rather watched a new episode of Agents of Shield even though the last season was wearing me down. The acting in this show seemed really bad. It was like an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I know lots of people used to dig that show but I never understood why, it was shit. I’m not going to write this show off just yet though. Agents of Shield took about three quarters of a season before it hooked me. Even then it was probably the crossover with Captain America Winter Soldier that really sealed the deal.

The other reason to give this show some time is the fabulous Amy Acker. For anyone unfamiliar with her work as Root on Person of Interest you really ought to find that show and watch it. I think you can find it on Netflix. She’s electrifying on that show and it’s one of the smartest best written and coolest network shows of the past few years. It’s a shame they cancelled it but as long as Acker stays in front of the camera somewhere I’ll get over it. But unfortunately she is given little to do here. Fingers crossed she takes on a larger role as the series continues.
