The Gridcoin mining experiment - host normalization continued

in #utopian-io8 years ago (edited)

Let's start with the bad news. Somehow the host on which I do this logging crashed last weekend. Unfortunately in such a way that I even did not get a notification. Since this host is not doing anything useful other than BOINCing I only noticed when checking the data. I quickly restarted to limit the damage on the experiment but unfortunately two days of data is influenced by this.

Purpose of the experiment

I continue this experiment because it provides interesting facts. The ones who are very involved in gridcoin know that RAC can change and is not predictable for various reasons. This experiment shows this with real life data and can help newcomers by example to see how complex gridcoin mining is and give experience users some data to look at and confirm their understanding and insights.

This data is gathered on a virtualized Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64 Edition running on a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 0 @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7] core with 4GB of RAM. The computing preferences are set to use at most 50% of the cores at 100% of the time. The project being crunched is VGTU.

####Data loss
The host going down is clearly visible in the data. Both points per second and RAC show a sudden drop. This is actually a nice example of how different rewarding proposals could affect the reward. Points per second dropped more than RAC percentage wise.

It's a bit unfortunate that this happened just now because it seems host normalization is influencing the RAC just now. Team RAC has reached a bottom and is now slowly moving back up. It seems that also the points per second are topping off at the same time. We'll have to see how this continues.

####Mining rewards
With a crypto crash like this it is quite obvious mining rewards have returned to what they were before:

This is an overview of the top 10 contributors on VGTU. What's interesting here is that the pools keep increasing their RAC so the crash is not really affecting the crunching efforts, which, from a scientific point of view is superb.

this sounds interesting (though I'm not sure what RAC means hehe).

I was wondering, is gridcoin mining something that needs a lot of power, or can it be run to some extend on, say, a Raspberry Pie ?

I'd love to get into some scientific mining, but my current 2009 Mac has a tendency to crash brutally every time it's overloaded, so pretty sure mining anything is a no-no on it, as far as making sure it survives.

For some info on RAC: The math behind BOINC RAC
To mine on a Pi: Gridcoin mining on an old Raspberry Pi

Just be aware that a Pi won't make you rich. My old Pi is still running making 0.023GRC a day. That's 0.1 eurocts a day :-D. I don't think that covers electricity.

BOINC allows to set the amount of computer resources assigned to it. So it could be set to only use one core for example.

Wasn't expecting a fortune XD

IT just seems like an interesting thing to get started.

And who knows... maybe I can fix the 7 broken laptops I have hanging around and get them doing something useful. (In my family, we're a bit loath at throwing out old computers. we're electronics hoarders XD).
I'd need to find a solar panel or some sustainable way to power them first, of course, but still. they might finally become useful XD
