Canal - Day 116

She pulled over. She had made up her mind. She couldn’t take it anymore.

Memories flashed through her mind as she unstrapped herself. “No. No.” She hit the steering wheel and opened the door.

In a few seconds, she was staring down at the canal, her hands on the railings.

This isn’t going to be easy. I better find another option. Maybe poison… No… I can. I will.

She climbed the railings.

Behind, the sound of tires screeching drew her attention.

Her boyfriend’s car was behind hers. He stepped out and ran. “Please. Don’t. Lisa - don’t.”

“Don’t come close. Go away!” she screamed.

The sound of water flowing below was clear. With him present, she was determined. She wanted him to see the end of what he started—what he likely wanted.

“Okay, okay, I will. Please,” he said.

He took a step closer. She climbed one step higher.

“One last chance,” he said.

“Please don’t jump,” a voice said.

Lisa glanced back, and a man and a lady were standing side by side. The lady’s hand was on her chest.

She changed her mind and started to climb down. Then—she slipped.

Manson jar - Day 115

I opened my eyes and looked at the window.

It sounded again.

Is it from outside?

I turned to Rachael to wake her, but I changed my mind and got out of bed.

Standing close to the bed, it sounded again, and this time it seemed to be coming from inside the house.

What’s that?

I walked gently to the bedside table to get my pistol. Moments after I opened the drawer, Rachael called me.

“Be quiet,” I said, whispering. “It seems there’s an intruder.”

I opened the room door slowly.

Damn! It’s in moments like this that I hate that I’m a man.

There was no one in the living room. Cautiously, I walked to the kitchen even though it was obvious no one was there. I switched on the light and my eyes fell on the Manson jar on the sink; its content had been poured in the sink.

Who did this?

I tightened my grip on the pistol.

Dream - Day 111

Ana closed the door quickly and locked it.

Inside was dark, but it was better than being on the street where they could see her.

Breathing heavily, she turned around. Then she took a few steps forward.

Am I safe here?

“You are,” a female voice said and lights turned on.

The place was damn big. The tiles, walls, and ceiling were white. At the other end of the space, a tall figure was wearing white, standing beside a door.

How come? I didn’t speak.

“I heard you. Come,” the voice said.

She shook her head and looked down. “Are you one of them?”

“No. Come before it’s too late.”

She looked back and the door had vanished. She could see the street. Her heart skipped a beat, and she tried to take a step forward. But her legs were stiff. It was as if they had been glued to the floor. She stretched her hand toward the figure. “Help.”

Moments later, she heard their sounds. They were getting closer.

“Help!” She looked back and one of them hopped past, and then another.

She stopped trying to move and rested a little. Then she moved her leg with all her energy, and she was able to take a step forward. Looking back again, another hopped past.

“Don’t try too hard,” the voice said. “All you have to believe is that I can help you.”

Her heart was beating fast. She stopped trying. “I believe,” she said.

A force pushed her, making her slide over the floor quickly to the front of the figure. It was a woman with long hair, but faceless.

The woman stretched her long hand and was lowering it toward Ana’s face.

Immediately the woman’s hand made contact with Ana’s face, Ana opened her eyes.

It was only a dream.

California - Day 110

The engine cut off.

10:25 p.m.

She struggled to turn the steering wheel and pulled over.

Her worst fear: It had run out of gas.

She turned off the radio and picked up her dead phone and tried to turn it on. The screen blinked. Then she started the engine, and it turned off a few seconds later.

Ahead, at the other side of the undivided road, there was a small house with a dim bulb in front of it.

Should I go there or wait here for… a miracle?

She stepped out of the car and looked left—at darkness—hoping headlights would appear in the distance. After taking a deep breath, she took off her heels and started toward the house.

A dirt bike with no front tire was resting on a big tire in front of the doorstep, and she had to stride over it. Reaching the door, she raised her hand to knock; her eyes fell on a sticker at the top of the door with “California” on it in red text.

She knocked.

“What do you want?” The voice sounded behind her, close, and it was damn deep.

She turned and saw a tall, bearded man holding a rod.

Yard Sale - Day 109

The man was wearing a black hat and shirt. His jeans looked old, as were his browns boots. He stopped where Sarah had arranged some jugs and picked one up.

He looked at it for a few minutes - which was kind of odd. After dropping it, he started laughing and pointing at it. “I want this,” he said.

“Sarah,” her husband said behind and tapped her shoulder. “Why were you calling my phone?”

“Mark,” Sarah said and glanced back. “This man is acting weird.”

“I want this. How much?” the man asked loudly, and he was still looking at the jug. Then he picked it up suddenly and started walking toward them.

One second Sarah was standing in the driveway, and the next she was inside the garage.

“Mark! Come.”

Mark glanced at Sarah, but he didn’t move an inch.

“Do you want it?” Mark asked.

“No. I want you,” the man said, stopped, and scratched his cheek. “Who’s in charge of the yard sale?”

Mark was about to answer when the man turned and walked back to where he’d picked up the jug.

He dropped it and walked away.

Describe Wind - Day 108

Lead pushed the button and the engine turned on. The instruments behind the steering wheel came to life. His eyes travelled from the dashboard to the passenger seat. He couldn’t help it; he moved his hand over its black, shiny leather.

“You wouldn’t get a better deal anywhere else,” the salesman said and rested his arms on the driver’s side door. “Do you want to take it for a spin?”

Lead nodded and revved the engine. He shifted the gear into drive and wore the seatbelt.

The salesman raised himself and signaled for the garage to be opened.

Lead zoomed out.

***

Ten minutes later, Lead drove into the garage. The salesman was standing beside a yellow Lambo, smiling. Lead turned off the engine just as the salesman got to the driver’s side.

“Describe the experience in this super-fast convertible,” the salesman said.

“Asking me to describe the experience is like asking me to describe wind?”

You're an excellent writer, I hope you know that. Each story kept my attention to the very last word and the first one (or the last, prompt-wise) gave me chills. Keep doing what you're doing!

Hello Honeydue, thank you! And thanks for the prompt too.

I agree with @honeydue. You draw the reader in very fast - and quite a few unexpected endings :)

Like: she slipped...

These are great! My only complaint is that I want more stories! The man in "California " gave me shivers. I'm telling myself that he had a perfectly good reason for holding a rod and it wasn't anything scary at all. As for the yard sale, I think I would just tell the guy he could have the jug for free right from the beginning.

Scary: like hit her with the rod or carry her into the house and tie her to a chair :)
But actually, he could be a good man and offer to help.

What if you tell the weirdo he can have the jug for free and he immediately asks for another? :)

Lol. I like your imagination. Sometimes, it's just satisfying to let the story hang and allow your readers to create their own ending.
Wish I had gotten to read these stories some days earlier, then my vote would've have counted.

True @uc-phoenix.
