Book II Chapter 6

Inside the briefing room deep under the White House, the emergency session continued. A messenger knocked on the door and was bid entry. The messenger walked up to General Crook, handed him the message, and exited the room.

“If you will excuse me for a moment?” General Crook said and proceeded to read the message. When he was through, “Mr. President, the Fillmore County Utah Sheriff’s Department reported a visual on the crash of the two F-16’s. It appears the aircraft entered an area where time changed back to the year 1856. They have a man in the Sheriff’s office from the year 1856 and the deputy that witnessed the crashes also saw another man from 1856. Electrical devices do not operate in the area where time has changed. Would you like to see the message Mr. President?”

“Yes.”

General Crook brought the message to the President the returned to his briefing station. The President read the message and then passed it around the table. After some moments of silence while all read the message, the President asked,

“Should we deploy all National Guard units to completely seal off the area immediately? And can we get a hold of the deputy who is a witness to this? Did anyone here know what was going on at this research station and who is responsible for authorizing this?”

Everyone in the room said they were unaware of the project. While they talked, an aide walked up to the President and said that the call had been placed and the deputy was on the line waiting along with the man from 1856. The President nodded, “People let’s hear a first-hand witness account. Put the call through.” He said to the aid. The aid waved his hand to another assistant, then retreated to his station.

“Hello, this is the President; we have you on speaker, who is this?”

“This is Deputy James Smith.”

“Deputy, could you tell us what happened when the two F-16’s crashed?” The President asked.

Deputy James related the incident completely. He told described how they flew and that their engines shut off about a mile inside the time barrier.

“Is there anything else you wish to tell us that might help?” The President asked.

“My EPV came to a halt and died once I drove into the time change. It was like the batteries could not hold a charge. We were using a flashlight to examine the road in front of the house because Cyrus Weeks, the man from 1856 said its position changed. The further we walked east, the brighter the flashlight grew. We decided we could push the EPV through the edge of the time change and we were able to immediately start the EPV, go to a phone and call it in then report.”

“Why didn’t you use your radio?” The Secretary of Defense asked.
“Radios and cell phones do not seem to work out here and it has been like that for a long time.” Deputy James Smith answered.

“Is there anything else you wish to say?”

“When I first arrived at the ranch of Cyrus Weeks, there was a huge explosion far off to the west. A big fireball rose up into the sky and then there was a loud explosion sound that followed.”

“What time was that?”

“About two pm, fourteen hundred hours, was when the explosion occurred.” Jimmy said.

“Can we talk with Mr. Cyrus Weeks?”

“This is Cyrus Weeks. I never seen or thought of anything like this stuff in my life, Mr. President.” Cyrus said.

“Yes, there has been some changes, so you are actually from the year 1856 Mr. Weeks?” The President asked.

“Yes, it was January 25th, 1856 when the Deputy here rolled up to the ranch and spoke with my brother Bobby Mereweather.”

“So, you were not at home at the time?”

“I was out looking for my fiancee, Mindy Woczlewski, she is from Chicago, 2012 and showed up at my house of the 16th of January and disappeared on the 20th of January. The Deputy said he knew her so I came with him to find her.” Cyrus answered.

“Deputy did you tell us everything?” The President asked.

“I forgot to mention that part, so much has happened today.”

“Let’s hear more of what you know and is it possible to talk to this Mindy Woczlewski?”

They went on and talked and talked. There were questions from everyone around the table. The conversation took over an hour. When the President was done asking the questions, the call was ended. But not before Jimmy said that Cyrus Weeks was recorded dead, January 16th, 1856.

Jimmy was allowed to take Cyrus to the hospital to see Mindy, and then he had to report back to duty because of the emergency.

Cyrus followed Jimmy to the nurses’ station. The nurses gave him clearance to sit in Mindy’s room even though the visiting hours were over because Cyrus had no place to stay and Mindy gave her permission when asked.

“Oh Cyrus, come here and hug me.” Mindy said when she saw Cyrus enter the room.

Cyrus walked over to the bed that Mindy rested upon, “I thought you were gone from my life forever and you are right, I am not sure that I like 2012 but if you are in it, I’ll stay.” He whispered as he hugged her resting body.

“Oh, I thought that might be the way you would think.” Mindy smiled as she wrapped her arms around him. They kissed for the longest time, “They told me you were a hallucination; that I dreamed you from breathing the smoke from the signal fire and I almost believed them but here you are.”

“And here you are as beautiful as ever. I told you not to breathe that smoke.”

“All of a sudden the house, the barn, everything was gone and I had to build another fire and it was a couple of hours before they whisked me here to the hospital.” Mindy said.

“I was down shoveling the path toward the barn, came back up to tend the fire, looked in the house, and you were gone.” Cyrus said, "I looked for you every day."

Doctor Perry knocked on the door, and then entered. “This is really Cyrus Weeks?” He asked stunned.

“I am Cyrus Weeks, yes, who are you?”

“Cyrus this is my Doctor, Doctor Perry. Doc, this is my hallucination, Cyrus Weeks.”

“You are really from the past?” Doctor Perry asked incredulous.

“Yes.”

“And Mindy walked into the past with you and stayed in the past for four days?”

“Yes.”

“How could that be possible?”

“I don’t know.”

“Neither do I.” Mindy said, “Since I was not hallucinating, am I okay to checkout of the hospital?”

“You are sedated but I suppose that is up to you.” Doctor Perry said, “It would be about eight hours before you could drive or be safe to move around without accident. I could take the IV’s out and that might hasten it to six hours.”

“Yes, if I don’t need the IV’s, let’s remove them.”

“I will remove it immediately, if you will excuse me Mr. Weeks?” Doctor Perry waited for Cyrus to move away from the bed and then removed the IV’s from Mindy’s arm. He placed a cotton ball with a bandage over the wound the needle made and told Mindy to hold it in place for the next twenty minutes. When Doctor Perry was finished, he asked Mindy, “Do you wish to check out now or wait until the morning?”

“If I cannot drive, maybe I should wait until the morning.”

“Excellent. I will let the nurses know you will leave in the morning when you wake up. Umm…originally, I told your company that it would take a month for you to recover, do you want me to stick with that Mindy?”

“Maybe two months?” Mindy asked as she looked into Cyrus’s eyes, “I think we will be getting married before we head out to the ranch.”

“Two months it is and you won’t sue me for diagnosing you as having hallucinations, will you?” Doctor Perry asked.

“No I won’t sue you. I am not sure I believed it once I found myself in the ruins of the house so how could you be to blame?”

“You’ll sign a release then?” Doctor Perry asked.

“Yes Doc, I’ll sign a release.”

“How would like three months off work?”

“Whatever you say Doc.”

“Done.” Doctor Perry turned to leave.

“We are getting married right Cyrus?”

“Oh, certainly yes, if you will have me Mindy?” Cyrus said as he moved close to the bed.

“Is it okay to lock the door on the room Doc?” Mindy asked Doctor Perry.

“I’ll notify the nurses.” Doctor Perry said as he left the room.

Before Cyrus made it to her Mindy said, “Do you see that button on the door handle, could you press it?”

Cyrus walked over and pressed the button.

“Now, Cyrus dear, why don’t you take off your coat, pistol, and knife and get comfortable on the bed with me?”

“Boots in bed?”

“Whatever you want Dear. Whatever you want.”
