Yves Tanguy comes into contact with surrealism in 1925, being fascinated by the theory and practice of the movement. He begins to practice the automatic techniques, as himself assures in his writing The Creative Process, always let be guided by the forms that come out of his brush. The "mental landscapes" of Tanguy sometimes evoke the past of its author, initially a pilot apprentice in the merchant marine.

Belomancie I (Belomancy I) is one of those imaginary landscapes, born of the subconscious, populated by strange presences halfway between the mineral and the organic, and conceived with a technique that shapes these images in "logical" spaces through the traditional perspective. The result remember mysterious formations of the marine depths.

The name of this painting, Belomancie, refers to the divinatory art based on the use of arrows, but, as it happens with the titles of other Tanguy compositions, it has no relation with the content of the work, is a trick to disorient the viewer and add enigmatic component.
