Gozo Trip - Day 4 Morning

Doctors and Pea Cakes

You may remember from my last Gozo post that we ended Day 3 going to bed early and my daughter feeling quite poorly.

Our plan had been to go out first thing in the morning and start the day with a pea cake and coffee. One of our favourite things to do when in Gozo.

Yet again, I was so caught up in enjoying the moment I forgot to take a photograph but managed to find one online.

Pea cakes or Pastizz as they are called in Malta are a traditional savoury pastry with a filling of either ricotta cheese or mushy peas.

They are freshly baked in the morning and tend to sell out quickly in the cafes but you can find them in bakeries at more times during the day.

Our morning didn't go as planned though as then Rebecca had developed full blown tonsillitis and found it practically impossible to swallow. This left us with no choice but to spend the beginning of Day 4 at the drop-in clinic.

We made the mistake of not taking water with us. It was another hot day and there was none available in the clinic.

Fortunately we only had to wait just over an hour to be seen (which I'm told is very good) and Rebecca was examined and given a prescription.

I have to say the prescription bit amused me. The doctor just lent across his desk, took a piece of paper from the printer and wrote it by hand. 😂

In the UK prescriptions are written on prescription pads and there is a whole official procedure to follow if they are lost, stolen or fraudulently used. Stealing them is quite a lucrative crime.

I just loved the casual nature of this. It's so Gozo. 😁

After the doctors we went to St George's Square to meet the rest of the family and have our pea cakes and coffee described above.

Sadly, by the time we got there the pea cakes had sold out and we had to have cheese cakes instead.

Just as well we like those too. 😂

All in all it was an interesting and enjoyable start to the another lovely day on Gozo!

The pea cakes looks a bit like cornish pasties

They do look a bit like that @livinguktaiwan but they taste nothing like them and they are much smaller.

They're only about 3-4 inches maximum. 😁
