I broke my writing dry spell!

in #rambling7 years ago

Well...SBD is back at $1. I'm not fully sure why, but this is a relief to me. I can only hope that so many don't continue to HODL that we continue to have problems and keep getting paid out in Steem. I usually sell my SBD for Steem to trade anyway, so it's not a huge deal to me. I just don't really like the idea of it happening.

Of course, holding SBD when it's $1 hoping for even a few more cents doesn't have a huge downfall for the user. The peg is enforced at the bottom. It shouldn't ever be under $1 for any length of time. Of course, that doesn't mean much when you're trading it for crypto. If you're trading it for a crypto that's down, even though it's always going to be $1 worth, it's worth more BTC now than it will be in a week if BTC rises even just a little. Of course, if BTC continues to fall, since that SBD will likely stay $1 or more, it's good to HODL right now. If you're trading it for Steem though, it's not too bad of a time to do so. Steem is lower than it has been in a long time.

Steem is really damn low. But I'm not depressed about it or anything. It means that for now, my holdings are worth a bit less but I plan to buy the dip. As much as I can anyway.

I also managed to break whatever was holding me back in writing just a bit more. I haven't finished up my book just yet. I still need to get back to that. But I started a new series. It might be a funny little story about a girl getting a job as a human body pillow but I'm enjoying writing it.

All in all I'm feeling pretty optimistic.

I'm still not traveling the world yet, in large part due to steem taking a hit, but I'm feeling pretty good today. I think the fact that I was able to get back to writing is a large part of that.

I'm even considering possibly selling my book as an ebook. After editing of course. The first draft might forever be on the blockchain but anyone that's ever done any writing can tell you that the first draft isn't necessarily like the final draft. I'm pretty satisfied with it as a whole though. I don't think I'll make any major changes that will modify the plot in any significant way.

It's pretty much done. I just need to get myself to finish it up. It was always about his "vacation" on the edge of a black hole. That's over. He's back near his home base, with pirates hot on his tail, but close enough.

Hawk your wedding ring. Sell the car. Morgage your house.

BUY MORE STEEM!

Who knows where prices will go. For me I try to look at it like earning anything for posting on social media is a bonus! lol

Agreed! When we have lower expectations, then we feel much more satisfaction from being rewarded )))

This is the first post of yours that I have read. You've written a book? I must go through your previous posts to find out more... It's nice to see some optimism in this space during our current climate. I definitely intend to buy steem as soon as I get paid. Still considering whether or not to sell a kidney... ;)

Yeah, it sorta started as a freewrite based on an image, and it ended up continuing on for quite a few parts.

"My Vacation on the Exotic Shores of a Black Hole"

This is an image drawn by @wolv for a contest I did to draw images based on the story.

This is part 1, if you're interested in reading it. It's about a guy who's ship breaks down on the edge of a black hole, and he has to repair his ship and get back on track. It's mostly done. I got maybe 2 chapters left to do, then I gotta edit them and put them together as an actual book.

As for the optimism...a lot of times this place can get to you. Just like life can get to you. Little shit piles up every day. But you also get stronger every day.

Steem is down as far as price...but the question is, do you believe in it? There's all this shit here that makes me doubt it a bit, but the little changes that someone has to do to make it a bit easier to curate, I'm pretty sure they're gonna get done. People are going to make curation tools, so it's easier to find awesome posts and upvote them. Then it will be harder and harder to get into trending by paying bots, and the problem will slowly melt away. Then, Steem will be tremendously undervalued. So, if you think about it, there's every reason to be optimistic. We're in early on something that could explode, and have retirement savings being built for us with every post. Steem being low now is something to be happy about, because we can buy in low. Even if we sell in a month, we'll probably have doubled our money, if we sell at the right moment. Remember, sell high, buy low. That means selling when it's going down, even if it's just to buy back lower.

Hey, I just finished reading part 1. It is really well written!

I really like how you were able to blend the sense of urgency/panic with moments of humour. I also think that your two characters definitely have two very different "voices" - you managed to get the protagonist's voice very human, in an almost Hans Solo-esque way (hope that's ok to say!), whereas Julia very clearly sounded like AI. Their relationship with each other also came across very well.

I had never thought about the dilation of dying in a black hole before; the thought of being slowly ripped apart sounds like one of the worst ways to die ever!

I want to give it an upvote, but need to check how the voting works on here first. Does it still count if you vote for a post that's 6 months old? If it'll still be beneficial then I will definitely go back to upvote it. I'm still unsure about how this whole curation thing works to be honest! I get that, as a newbie, I can only vote a certain amount of times in a day before total depletion of my steem power, but sometimes it seems like my vote is worth $0.00... still so much to learn clearly!

I like the fact that new curation tools are on the horizon. I wasn't really aware that there was a problem here until now. I really like the concept behind this platform, it's sad to hear that people can pay for bits to make their posts trend. Makes me wonder about quality content being lost. I also like the idea behind Narrative, which I've invested in. Excited to see where that goes.

Your posts are very educational for me - thanks!

Upvoting old things makes no difference. It doesn't give them any money, and it doesn't spend any of your VP. It's basically the same as a thumbs up on any other social network, after 7 days. Took me the longest time to figure out that one. Everyone seems to know that it doesn't actually give them money, but not everyone knows that it doesn't actually expel VP.

I use steemworld to watch my VP and comments. Your's is https://steemworld.org/@crypt0rhodes.

The best time to vote, as far as what your vote's worth, is right before it reaches 100%, but it's crazy to try to keep your VP up that high. Best to keep it between 80-90%, so you don't lose too VP when you sleep, and it's not too low. You're still what's known as a "dust" account though, so even at peak times, you really need to vote with someone else to even reach what is known as the "dust threshold". To prevent abuse by bots farming for upvotes, you need to have at least a few cents on a post for it to pay-out. I think it's like 3 cents, but I can't remember for sure.

As to the story...I'm not sure if it can really be called "well written", as a freewrite. To me, for some reason, it feels like I really should go over it like a dozen or more times, editing, before I can really say it's well written. I am very proud of what came out though. Perhaps I'm even a bit surprised that it came out so well, given that it's basically a first draft, with only minor spelling and grammar corrections as I write.

Then again, I'm also a bit afraid that when I edit it for publication that I might do too much, and ruin something that it had.

I always thought I was bad at differentiating voices in stories...either I was wrong, and just critical of myself, or I forced myself to get better because of my self-criticism. These characters did seem to come out of my head very well though. They're just naturally very different characters. When I was imagining them in my head as I wrote it, I pictured the captain as a similar type to a sort of mix between Han Solo, Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy, but maybe during out-takes, and Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly. That almost silly lone captain type character has been well established in a lot of movies and shows. But, of course, the captain in this story is his own character as well. He's quite a bit darker and quieter I think.

As to Julia...that's quite a bit more complicated. She's very clearly AI...but she's a bit...crazy... You'll see if you decide to continue reading it. He's done quite a bit of modification of her personality matrix over the years, and it gives her a very unique personality as a result.

Hey,

Thanks for all the info about voting and about "dust" - still trying to get me head around it all. It seems that I need to be take a few things into consideration before upvoting. Really appreciate you taking the time to share this with me.

I am so looking forward to reading about crazy Julia! I love the idea that she's a complicated character and that all the modifications have created this very unique and crazy personality!

This version of your story is very well written, especially because it's a first draft; there's something very raw about it, which is what I felt was very engaging. I get that you need to do another draft (or two, or three...) before publishing, and there is always a concern about losing something special in doing so, but I guess this is where you will have to trust your gut instinct. Your character voices were very clearly defined in this version, so whatever you did was spot on. I am certainly looking forward to seeing what happens next!

I remember that little winner B-)

@geekpowered Nice article. Do you think we need more steem power to boost or steem coin and steem dollars are equally important?

Steem is far more important. Steem Dollars are just what you get paid. Steem Power is what allows you to reward great authors you find.

Thanks for the details. :)
