Cloning Herbs, growing Pineapples - An Update

Send in the clones.jpg

Hi gardeners, homesteaders and Steemit friends. This post is a little update on my cloning herbs post and my growing pineapple post.

It’s a real pleasure working in the garden, getting your hands dirty and seeing things grow. I think Voltaire describes it perfectly:

As you will see in this post, the methods I described in the earlier posts worked really well. Just one clone didn’t make it and the pineapples are doing fine.

The method I use to grow a pineapple from a pineapple is as follows:

  • Cut off the crown
  • Twist off the remaining fruit
  • peal off the bottom leaves
  • Stick it in the potting compost and water it in

It was three weeks ago when I prepared this pineapple. As you can see it already has grown substantially.

Of course I should leave it alone but I want to share if it has rooted or not.

Yes, beautiful white little roots, better get it in to the soil quick and water it in.

The other pineapples are doing fine as well. They definitely have grown some but it will be a long time before we can harvest the fruits of our labour.

In the other post from two weeks ago we cloned basil and mint and planted some spring onion.

To make a clone I do the following:

  • Cut off a shoot from the mother plant below the fourth or fifth node
  • Remove the bottom leaves so that only 2 or 4 remain
  • Dip the stem in rooting hormone
  • Stick the clone in very moist compost
  • Put a plastic baggie over it to keep the humidity high

In this way I did 5 mint, 3 basil and 17 others. Unfortunately one basil didn’t make it. All the other ones are happily thriving.

Here's some mint, it is already developing runners to form new plants.

Of course it's not necessary to clone mint like this. Just take a cutting and put it in a glass of water and put it in your window sill. The mint will be later planted in the garden.

Here's the basil. It looks great and it has already grown a lot in just two weeks time.

The other one developed a bit slower but you can see new leaves forming.

The basil was fully flowering. That's not ideal if you want to make clones. You don't want the clones to keep flowering. It's better when they return to their vegetative state. To do so they need at least 16 hours of light per day. So I put them under a grow light and leave the light on for 18 hours a day.

It's time to repot the basil. On this picture we can see how well it has rooted.

When replanting make sure that their are no air pockets in the compost. I work the compost in with my finger tips and give the pot a few solid slaps on the side. That helps the compost to settle. After that water the plants in well.

With the other herb I always have a 100% success rate cloning like this. Speaking of the other herb; did you know that humans and all other mammals have an endo-cannabinoid system. We don't have a endo-pepper system nor an endo-lettuce system. No we have an endocannabinoid system.

This means, that we humans have a companion plant on this planet.

This plant can:

  • feed everybody on this planet with its seeds alone. The seeds are a whole food. We only need to eat these seeds to get everything that the body needs.
  • fuel our entire global energy need
  • produce all the natural plastic that we need
  • cure everybody who has cancer
  • cloth everybody
  • house everybody

The benefits of this plant is endless. So guess what our beloved governments did? They made it illegal. But I digress.

Finally we planted some spring onion. Not much to say here but they're doing great. I'll put them in the garden once they are a bit bigger.

Me too!

These look great - so healthy.

Great post! You taught me something today. I had no clue that pineapples grew in the ground.
I had thought they grew in trees. Anyone else?

@originalworks

Well the pineapple is a bromeliad and they often grow in trees. Thank you.

Excelent work!

Another fantastic article!

We use fresh aloe vera as a rooting hormone, do you know of any other natural ways to help them root? I have to go all the way to the capital to find that stuff, and Im unfamiliar with how sustainable it might be.

Thank you. I read on the internet that saliva or apple vinegar might work. There are other ones as well.

Fabulous job on the plants...

Thank you, I'm honoured. I accept of course. Cheers.

hmm I tried growing some plants from cuttings this week, but they don't seem to be doing well. I didn't do that part with the plastic bag though. Perhaps I'll try again with that method.

It's important to keep the humidity high. All my clones would die if I didn't do so. Thank you for reading my post.
