Acceptance
Everyone wants to be accepted by people around us.
We want the acknowledgement from others and we want to feel that we belong to somewhere.
Below is a short videoclip about a cell group leader, Peter, who learnt the hard truth about what true acceptance meant.
Tear off our masks
Many of us may put on false masks to hide our secret deeds that we feel shameful of.
In the videoclip, Peter, the cell group leader, demonstrated acceptance for others before Anthony, an autistic youth, joined the cell group.
His false appearance of acceptance of others was destroyed when he got frustrated with Anthony and told Anthony to leave.
Peter was angry when Anthony exposed his bad habit of smoking. Anthony was only trying to get Anthony and his schoolmates to quit smoking through the anti-smoking hotline.
Peter was forced to reflect when all the other cell members left the gathering because of his bad attitude to Anthony.
I understand that we do wear different masks because we find the need to do so.
We hide things that we do not want others to know. It would be hard for us to take off our masks.
We need to learn how to take off our masks and nurture true acceptance of ourselves first.
By accepting who we are, we can remove the bad habits as well as accept others who are different from us.
Many people who are unable to accept others may not even have accepted themselves in the first place.
They may even hate the secret things that they are doing but they are unable to control themselves.
Understanding
People who may judge others due to their own pride and blindness to see their own errors.
People who feel that they are better may be the ones who need to change.
Peter did not understand Anthony well and his facial expressions exhibited obvious avoidance of Anthony.
Anthony did not choose to have autism but he was born with it. Near the end of the video, Peter understood that it was not Anthony who needed to change but he was the one.
Anthony was a simple youth with a good heart. He prayed together with Peter and this touched Peter’s heart deeply.
As humans, we may often judge others by appearance or behaviours but we may not understand the ones that we are judging well.
While I was on the public transport, I was able to see that it was not the educated ones who gave up their seats to the elderly but the construction or factory foreign workers that many always judged and despised them.
As educators, we know about never judge the book by its cover but we may be guilty of judging others unfairly without true understanding.
The brutal facts are not always easily accepted since we may have thought that we are not the ones who have judged others.
In conclusion
In church, everyone may look perfect but no one is perfect as we have our flaws hidden.
We need to accept our flaws and make a decision to change for the better.
When we learn to accept ourselves, we may be able to accept others more easily.
Very often, we may judge others first but we may be the ones that need to judge ourselves.
Reflecting on ourselves first and learn to accept others as they are.
