The Day Steemit Went Full Wingdings

in #steem9 years ago (edited)

I had a dream one day about Steemit. I dreamt that I woke up, and as is the usual routine, I went straight to my computer and clicked into the browser to Steemit.

Wingdings... Everywhere... All posts and comments.

My jaw dropped. I first suspected something was wrong with my computer. But it was not affecting the Steemit UI or my operating system. Just the posts and content. Steemd also showed wingdings on the blockchain.

It wasn't even about the font. Trying to convert to other fonts showed that wingdings wasn't the problem, the text was all a scramble and whoever was responsible has some fascination with wingdings.

I went in Steemit chat and discord and asked around and people were equally confused as I was. Steemit was under attack by a prankster.

But I had to do my daily routine post, so I spilled out my thoughts about the wingdings woes. I think it was more about a rant about why wingdings exists in the first place. After hitting post, I saw the text scramble before my very eyes. Of course the dreaded fake Transaction Broadcast Error along with it. Which of course meant at the time that the post went ahead to the blockchain anyway.

Then a funny thing happened. I saw upvotes on my post! I saw comments on my post! The number went up a few cents.

That's curious. I wonder what's happening elsewhere else.

In the created page for new activity, Steemit was still buzzing with activity. The usual whales were posting and still getting the usual payout.

The economy was still active. People were still transferring SBD/Steem in exchange for goods and services, even though the social media platform was stuck with a bunch of garbage.

And that's when I realized something. Even if all of Steemit were generating gibberish instead of valuable comment, Steem as a currency would still be alive, well, and functional.

I suddenly felt imbued with a warm light, and sudden flashes of insight. Other answers to questions I had were starting to appear. Like the correct way to fix all of Steemit's value problems. A way to generate the best community. A way for fairer payouts. All the answers were at my fingertips.

And then I woke up. I scrambled for a pencil but by the time I furiously scrawled them down. I looked down at what I wrote.

That's right. Wingdings.

But one thing remained. The following interpretation of Steemit:

Steemit is a cryptocurrency-funded social media platform. Its ingenuity with respect to the goals for adoption of Steem is the use of social media and prospect of earning tokens to attract users.

This observation of course does not justify the lower quality crap that everyone sees and knows is lying around. As a community we control how the reward pool is distributed, and that is a great thing. How we do this determines who will come and play. It is up to us to make an internet nation worth being in.

This is an exploration of the currency aspect of the demand driving steem.

Thanks for exploring with me. What do you think about this interpretation? Obvious? Do you like wingdings? (Have you heard of it before?)

Sort:

Wingdings are new to me , are they bone in or boneless?

Bone in. Always bone in.

Imagine really one day we woke up into a "Wingdings" Steemit... What would we do?

Yeah we wouldn't be able to share our thoughts with others until they fixed it. I was amused at the thought that activity would still be buzzing still with upvote bots and people generating money and collecting from the reward pool and etc.

The day Steem went full retard.
In 10 years I will show that my kids.
"This is the platform that made me rich"

Of course the dreaded fake Transaction Broadcast Error along with it. Which of course meant at the time that the post went ahead to the blockchain anyway.

You have some very detailed dreams. Isn't is amazing when dream are so accurate to life that you have a difficult time telling if it's real or not. I laughed out loud when you wrote the secret of Steemit in gibberish. HA!

BTW I like my wingdings with a sweet barbecue sauce. @ironshield

It is, isn't it? I appeared also to have actually written a wingdings post right before this one hehe...

Haha. Relative of the Wang Dang Doodle?

I like my wingdigs with honey garlic. :) but seriously. The reward pool is limited and people with alot of VP use it to suck the pool dry with bots, empty comments, etc. Their should be a level of standard, not just jibbersish.
Cheers!!

Oh yes I completely agree about not being all gibberish. Need real people to come in here after all :). Not the wingdings zombie army.

That would be a nightmare. Every email I received at work being in windings.

My previous post I used a wingdings translation site and I think it put it into Unicode which is amusing.

The screenshot in this post used chrome inspector to change the font-family to wingdings. Which works for some odd reason... Not sure why anyone would use them now. Most be an old computer font relic...
