Shilin Night Market Mayhem
If you visit Taiwan, the night markets are the place to pop by at some point. It is popular with both locals and tourists, and you can find a variety of food stalls, trinkets shopping, and also everyone's favorite: rigged carnival-style games. Today I'll be describing our findings in the Shilin Night market. Generally it is very crowded, but that night was not as bad as I was expecting. We also had already eaten, so we were mostly there for some shopping.
Lemon Aiyu
Except for this one. It's a lemony drink with a kind of jelly inside. I find these tea places generally make things really sweet so you have to ask for less sugar. And no ice in my case. It really hits the spot thirst-wise.
Phone Accessories
Littered with Accessories
So these colorful things are stretchy silicone phone cases that can fit any phone. I thought these are really clever, and haven't seen them outside of here. Fun smart phone accessory innovations first appear in these night markets and then eventually they show up in other countries like the US. I remember the same thing happening with selfie sticks...
The Three Chosen Ones
Already have gotten a lot of comments on the phone case so far. The future...
Dog Stuffs
It's a fun place to wander: A bustling marketplace quite late at night. At some point we wandered into a shop for dogs.
Something Funny. Can You Spot it?
If you've followed me from the beginning, this is where one of Opal's costumes comes from, featured on Steem-o-ween.
Also, there's a little dog hidden in that last picture. Here it is up close. This one was a little irritable though. Growls if you get too close.
Awwww...
Fun Bags
There's a main road, and also many side roads that lead to more stores. One of them has some fun canvas bags, and we bought a few.
Real Translation: What are you looking at?
It may only make sense if you know Chinese. The "real translation" above is a result of literally translating the words to Chinese, and then interpreting that phrase.
And then there's this one.
Translation: Listen to you farting.
The translation in the bag seems odd, not sure how they got that translation. Maybe artsy. This bag is fairly graphic, and as you might imagine we've gotten a few laughs as we took it grocery shopping.
Carnival
We also stumbled by stalls set up with various kinds of games. We stopped by one where you are given a bucket of ping pong balls, and you try to accumulate as many points as possible, which can then be redeemed for prizes like stuffed animals.
Ping Pong Ball Cup Game
Yeah, it's hard. There goes the money. Don't spend it all in one place Mr. Shopkeeper!
(Also, I cheated, this is from another night market. And we won some tiny pencil case)
But anyway, that about wraps up this visit to the night market. A fun experience overall, great hangout spot, and who knows what you might find!

I've been there once, about 4 years ago. It was one of the three night markets I visited during my stay (the other being ximending and hualien).
The products peddled there are definitely very diverse, very interesting indeed.
Nice picture! Familiar feel hehe. I've been to ximending, I think the night life there is very different. I'm never sure what to do when I go there hehe. I guess there's movies and bars.
Now this is my kind of thing! Before having children my husband and I used to go out and do night shopping when we couldn’t sleep. I love being out with all the bright night lights. This looks like a really fun marketplace to shop at. I love the addition of carnival games too. Wow those canvas bags are very graphic. Thanks for giving us a peak of this market :)
Yeah! That's one of the draws if I decide to eventually make my way there. Can't find places like this in the states... Maybe someday
That looks like a ball! We always loved hitting the markets in Thailand, but it looks like Taiwan has those beaten hands down.
Hehehe
Lol @ Look what look and what a speech fart: And you bought it mwahahah XD hilarious!
My fav phone cover is the sloth. My son would love that.
Thanks Evan. I loved my little trip around the night market.
cheers
Anj :D
I did. I have to make another picture with it someone out in the wild
Yes, deffo. Do that XD
Dying laughing over here. Fart jokes are right up my alley hahaha
Now, this seems like a market you can find pretty much anything in. lol I loved all the photos but I think the farting bags take the cake from the all. Who came up with this idea to make a bad with a picture of a man bending down and farting..lol
I am still laughing at that one. What the heckkkkk. lol
Thank you for sharing your night market visit with us. Have an amazing day. :)
I knowww.. it's why we had to buy it. Cheers :)
Ow man! I love Carnival... I read and watched all the videos about how to cheat on those games and increase the odds of winning, like the way you throw is off!
Cool post, love the sloth mobile case.
Oh yeah I like to read about those kinds of tricks too. Like for the ring toss type where you throw all the rings at once. So I've heard.
Pretty colourful... That fart t-shirt was awesome... I'd love to see someone wearing that in the streets :P
That's not a t-shirt haha. But I have carried it before. I should take a picture of it and show it off here.
Would love to be here. Id love those phone accessories. What did you get for Opal?
Check out the link I put there to an old post :)
I'm sure those phone accessories will also invade your country soon enough!
Ah yes! I saw that outfit already. ^^
We have tons of accessories but those that have holes in it, didn't see it yet. ♥
