Getting Down to the Nuts and Bolts of Jupiter Retrograde -- What does it really mean -- and what does it mean to you? -- Now through early November

Going back over old ground

Jupiter recently turned retrograde in Sagittarius -- back on April 10. In Astrology, this forecasts changes, new learning and different kinds of growth in the area Jupiter affects in your life. Jupiter Retrograde (Jupiter Rx in Astrology shorthand) goes back over degrees and territory he's already passed over once. (Just like with Mercury Retrograde.) A planet in retrograde appears to retrace his recent steps ... and cover old ground for a second time.

The symbolism, of course, is that you are retracing, relearning, reconsidering the things that Jupiter rules. People sometimes seem to fret over retrograde planets, because it feels like they aren't making any progress. They don't have that sensation of forward momentum. They seem to be dealing with stuff they thought they already handled. There can be a sense of marking time or treading water -- or "running hard but getting nowhere" ... and the more impatient signs find this cosmic curriculum irritating.

But when you understand the function of retrograde energy -- or what it actually accomplishes -- you'll see it is so constructive. Yes, the sensation of speed and progress from a planet moving direct is terrific. I don't deny it. But retrograde energy -- if you use it right -- is like getting a time-out, more time to get a project completed, an extension to prepare for "what comes next." You don't have to be running flat out constantly to get things on your schedule finished. You can actually slow down enough to look around -- and hear yourself think.

This year, Jupiter -- traveling in Sagittarius until December -- has been in its own shadow since January 14. (When a planet is in its own shadow, it has crossed the degree of the Zodiac to which it will return once it retrogrades. It moves out a little farther, like a pet on a stretchy, retractable leash -- in this case almost exactly 10° ... from 14° 30' Sagittarius to 24° 21' Sagittarius. Then when it hits its retrograde point, it starts moving back, crossing those degrees in reverse. That's what's happening now.)

So ... pause for a moment and consider the work you have to accomplish -- that To-Do List that keeps filling up. If by some miracle you were handed 4 months of extra time to work on it, tidy up loose ends, get things organized and correctly assembled, take care of the details you've had to let slide with a lick-and-a-promise because there just wasn't time when you first got handed the assignment ... wouldn't you call that a blessing? (Believe me, I would -- and I do!! )

To add icing on this dessert, Jupiter is about nothing but good stuff. So, as he retrogrades, you get to go back and harvest the benefits, the gains, the profit, the Karma and the rewards you didn't collect -- or that weren't rich enough the first time through. I'm reminded of that card in Monopoly -- "Bank error in your favor. Here's some extra cash to compensate for your inconvenience." You want to throw that baby out with the bathwater? Hmmm. I didn't think so.

So ... Jupiter is traveling retrograde now in Sagittarius. That affects each sign differently (and each person differently still.) I can tell you some of what's happening for each sign in the next section tomorrow -- or maybe the last section on Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday. Who knows? (Otherwise this post would wind up being 4 miles long -- and I'm infamous for that anyway. I don't need to add more work to either one of our lists!!)

For the rest of this post, I'll talk about what Jupiter retrograde in Sagittarius specifically means. Jupiter Rx in Sagittarius asks you to examine and reconsider what you believe are your areas of expertise. Often this is somewhere where you have professional experience ... maybe something you've built or incorporated into your career.

But it is really simply an area, a field or a series of interrelated fields where you confidently know a lot of stuff. You are well beyond being just a beginner, a dabbler or even an "intermediate practitioner." You really know what you're talking about -- enough to teach anyone else who wants to learn how to do what you do and know what you know.

Often this finds its way into your professional projects whether it's actually considered intrinsic or not. It certainly will weave itself through what you do with your life. because it is somehow connected to your purpose ... your sense of who you are and the value you have to the world.

Well, Life is gearing up to ask you to contribute more of your special skills and knowledge -- enough to leave behind a legacy of what you've learned, what it means and how others can use it, too.

(This is explicitly designed so that every single person doesn't have to reinvent the wheel every time they want to do something similar to what you've already done. It lets you blaze a trail. People can follow your example. They can build on your knowledge. They can figuratively see farther because they get to stand on your shoulders -- just as you've done to get where you are.)

What you are doing now with this Jupiter retrograde -- which formally lasts until August 11 ... but with the shadow phase on the other side of this interval, it really lasts until early November -- is assessing what you know about areas where you know a lot of good stuff that you'd like to share (or that it might be a good idea to pass along for someone else to enjoy ... or benefit from.) You are organizing it better. You rediscovering things you've ignored ... or forgotten ... or forgotten you knew.

You are seeing how different bits and pieces (even pieces from other areas of study / other disciplines and fields / other experiences and perspectives) fit together to form a greater, more complicated mosaic. "Putting it together" this way may turn out to be a revelation to you. Or ... a reminder.

You yourself haven't incorporated all this value into your life on a day-to-day basis ... but as the benefits and wisdom of this become more obvious (now that you've taken a good look or "seen the light" finally) ... you will.

These months will deepen your knowledge. They'll broaden your scope. They will extend your reach and the impact you have. They will increase your stature -- and they will make you all the more valuable to the community where you exist. This will happen. It will center on specific themes. It will affect specific parts of your life. It will change you into a wiser, more valuable citizen.

I will write more about this next time. Because I've run out of room to carry on pushing the limits of this one. Meanwhile, think about what I've said. It's been nearly a month since this retrograde formally started. You should be able to see some of these outlines in your individual life.

Think about what you see happening. Live consciously. It beats the daylights out of the alternative!! Try it. Too many people ... aren't.
