Microsoft Workers Call On Company to End $480M Military Contract

in #news5 years ago

At least 100 employees from Microsoft have recently written a letter to the CEO and president, criticizing their plans to build HoloLens AR tech for the US military.

The HoloLens AR tech is part of a $480 million military contract that Microsoft has with the government.

The group is demanding that Microsoft put a stop to the arrangement, end the contract and stop developing this technology.

“We did not sign up to develop weapons, and we demand a say in how our work is used,” - the letter reads.

The workers behind the letter admit that they are alarmed at how Microsoft is using their work, providing weapons technology to the military. They insist that they didn't sign up to develop such weapons and they want to have a say in how their work is going to be used at the end of the day. Those behind the letter argue that the company has never crossed the line into weapons development until now and they aren't going to stand by and support the move.

The employees are also looking for Microsoft to publish a policy that details specific uses for its products, as well as appointing an independent ethics board to enforce those goals.

The controversial contract in question is an arrangement that Microsoft has with the US military to start outfitting the military with augmented reality visors and tools that might be able to help with combat and training.

In a similar incident, tech workers at Google have also previously protested over what the company had been doing, with plans to create a censored search engine in China. In one instance, Google reportedly failed to renew a contract with the Defense Department because workers had protested and resigned.

Previously, the president of Microsoft had issued a blog post defending the decision of the company to work with the military, insisting that they were in favor of a strong defense for the country.

Despite their affinity for supporting ever-growing militarism however, many employees aren't ready and willing to stand by and become war profiteers.

Im sorry but what the hell is wrong with this country. Do these people really think all the bad guys out there would just like to sit down with us and sing campfire songs. We, the US, have turned into a bunch of pansies!

blindly pursuing an aggressive foreign policy that bankrupts the nation and endangers the people by slowly stripping away their liberties and fueling blowback, doesn't do anybody any good, except for maybe those selling the weapons.

I get that too. I dont think we need to be all over the place. We need to spend some money here just fixing the infrastructure at home for a change

The push to control our minds, and develop these insane military killing devices is at a new high.

Makes me feel as though some over arching massive AI complex is pulling all the actual strings. Marching us towards utter annihilation, like from Terminator movies series.

It just gets crazier and crazier. I bet bill gates is all about nano bot winged killing bugs.

@doitvoluntarily I hope that the authorities of this great company make the right decision, it seems to me that it is time to stop encouraging everything related to armaments.

I believe probably the ceo will know bettee than them. He will have his reasons

I hope that these companies will keep on fighting back against being used in or being part of or getting involved in killing weapons/wars.
I think we all are sick of the wars and how much money is put into these killing machines instead of helping and supporting it's people.
I am glad to hear that Microsoft doesn't want to be part of being the war profiteers.
