Robots Covered In Human Flesh Coming Soon?

in #science7 years ago

According to researchers from the University of Oxford, we could soon see robots come to market that are covered in human flesh.

Biomedical students from the school say that there is the possibility to grow tissue grafts on humanoid robots. In a recent study that was published in the journal Science Robotic, the researchers say that because the robots' have the ability to mimic the same range of forces that are observed in human joints, that they could be used for advancement in regenerative medicine.

The researchers say that the robots can provide new opportunities for us in the way of medicine and science, in that they might help to provide assistance when it comes to growing musculoskeletal tissue grafts that might possibly be able to be used for tissue transplant applications.

As far as using the humanoid robots for growing the human tissue, researchers say that they would be a great option because they would allow for personalization with the tissue. They even suggest that it might help in the way of assisting with animal testing for pre-clinical trials.

Because of aging populations, there are increasing needs in the area of musculoskeletal tissue injuries and disorders.

When people suffer with this issue, they often suffer with pain and they also lack mobility. By using the humanoid robots to help engineer tissue grafts, it would assist to meet the demand in this area, as well as advance research and technology in the hopes of providing more affordable solutions to the market.

It seems that the topic of artificial intelligence is heavily divided, with many on either side of the aisle. There are a lot of people who see a threat with artificial intelligence and are worried about a future that embraces this technology blindly, rushing further toward a possible end scenario that we might wake-up one day and regret seeing.

Then there are others who are fully supportive of any and every advancement in the area of artificial intelligence, and see those who criticize such efforts as being stances that are rooted in fear and ignorance. There is both good and bad to this sort of technology, so it's no wonder the issue is so divided with many.

Technology is amazing, it has greatly improved our standards of living. It can change our lives and enable us to do things that we never thought imaginable. But technology has also had a negative side: unconstitutional spying, drone bombings/war, tools that enable the state to more efficiently inflict violence upon others etc. Technology can be used for good and it can also be used for bad, so I don't think it's fair to say that either artificial intelligence is entirely one or the other. I see it as a mixture of both, it depends on how we use it.

A number of historians, philosophers, and scientific experts, have also taken the time to previously assert their belief to the world that AI does have a great potential to benefit the market and humanity in a great number of ways. They say that this should be the purpose and goal of AI, to serve humanity. Among those who have asserted this to be true are individuals like Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Stephen Hawking.

They've also warned against using AI technology in a military fashion, criticizing any advancement towards an arms race and they even suggested that a ban should be considered on offensive autonomous weapons that are beyond meaningful human control. Clearly, they've urged us to proceed with caution.

It's exciting to see the possibilities of robots being used in a positive manner such as this one (mentioned above), by having the ability to assist with musculoskeletal tissue grafts for medical purposes, and more.

We now have robots carrying out a variety of tasks: delivering food, checking people into hotels, assisting in surgeries, and more. Scientists also say that pretty soon robots might even replace your regular visits to your GP, as robots have allegedly demonstrated superiority when it comes to accurate diagnosis. Robots that serve humanity? Yes! robots that inflict violence upon it? No Thanks!
