Pieces Of You

in #writing7 years ago

Both of my grandfathers passed away when my parents were children. My father’s dad, Omer, died when he was ten years old. My mother’s dad, Jessie, died when she was just eight years old. I know very little about these two men as a result. I have a few pictures, a couple of artifacts and a handful of stories.

Omer was enlisted in the Army when he was twenty two and he was honorably discharged in February in 1919. I have his discharge papers and a ‘War Ration Book Two’ of stamps. To my knowledge this is all, besides a few photographs, that remains of his possessions.

Grandpa Omer was much older than my grandmother. I know he was a farmer but I do not know if he owned his land. The story I was told is that Grandma Maggie’s dad ran off with another woman; leaving her mother to support their children on her own.

As a result they were very poor. When Omer offered to marry my grandmother when she was fifteen, my great grandmother let him. It was one less child for her to take care of and she was sure he would provide Maggie with a home, cloths and the food she needed. My grandmother was not happy about the arrangement and did not wish to marry a man in his thirties but she did as she was told to do.

When my grandma turned eighteen she wanted a divorce. Omer insisted on keeping my father and he gained custody of dad in court. So I know he loved my father and must have liked being a dad. My grandmother was permitted visitation but she moved away so she didn’t get to see dad often.

My father was left alone during the day when Omer worked the fields. Grandpa Omer did not come home for three days. A neighbor finally came by to check, found dad home alone and Omer dead in the field. It was determined that he died of a heart attack in the summer heat. My father was then sent to live with my grandmother.

I know even less about Grandpa Jessie. Mom did give me his middle name, Lee. Other than a few photographs my uncle was kind enough to let me scan, it is all that I have of his. But it is enough. I am proud to carry his middle name.

Jessie and my Grandma Dora fell in love when they were teenagers. They were allowed to marry and they immediately started a family. Grandma was newly pregnant with their seventh child when Jessie died.

The surroundings of his death are suspicious. No one knows if it was murder or suicide. He was found in a car, inside of a garage, along with two of his cousins. One of them was holding a gun. The car had been left running and they died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

My mother told me that Jessie visited at least three of his children that night in dreams to tell them good-bye. She was one of the three who had the dream. I’ve always chose to believe that he did come to say good-bye to them. I wish I knew more about Jessie but that is all that I have.

I never met these men, I know very little about them. However, I know that if it were not for them I would not exist.

Pieces of them flow through me and were passed to my children as well. Somewhere within my personality are sparks of my grandfathers. I wish I knew what sparks belonged to them.

Wow, awesome story debralee. It has sadness but awesome to have photos to put with names and stories. Gives one a sense of knowing if only a little. You know I totally relate.

Thanks! I love learning about family history. I've searched ancetory.com and gained much knowledge from it. :)

Yw and me too! I didn't have much luck on ancestry but mostly because my dad was an only child and Baltimore lost a lot of records in a big fire. My mom's mothers name was spelled wrong and never found any info (could be the researcher..me) though. I did eventually find some of my moms history on a site called rootsweb.

It's a shame that your family records were lost in that fire. I've only had one road block so far. My Grandma Maggie's mom was at least half Cherokee Indian. I have found very little on her & nothing of anyone before her.

I also have not looked up anything overseas yet. I may check out rootsweb. :)

Good luck! I found census records and couple of little things on Ancestry. It was a critical year so it was disheartening. My mom finally remembered some family names and that's how I found a lot of them and saw the misspelling. Turns out she had a big family but unfortunately I don't know many of the remaining family. It is what it is but those photos are truly a great thing to have. Weird thing is I found a photo of a great great grandmother on google and a photo of a grandfather on google..go figure!

Thanks! I hope you are somehow able to find more someday. I agree, the pictures are a lot and priceless.

It really is amazing what you can find on google. My grandma Maggie waited until I was in my 30's to let me know about and have the items from Omer.

My dad was never responsible so I am glad she understood to save them for me. I am sure dad would have lost them.

Yw! I am happy you have them = )

Researching you family history can be fun and lead you on some interesting adventures. I have travelled once to Europe to do some research and do so again.

I have loved my time on ancetory.com and even learned a few surprises. I've not yet ventured to the overseas records but I do want to in the future. I feel there is so much left to learn from that site. Its awesome that you have been overseas to look as well.

Nice post you share

Nice storys ! And you look so much like jessie ! Them eyes and that smile ... wow

You know, I honestly did not realize that I did until I put these photo's together yesterday. I've always thought I favored my dad & his family more. It took a minute to dawn on me too as I looked at it. It had to wipe away what I've always believed. lol

so nice to see things like that, from my dad side i have a few pics but it stops, at my granddad, for he had no contact with his mum>... lived with his grandparents. And from muy grandmum side i no nothing because they were against the marriage from my granddad to her. And on my mum side, everything they had disappeared with the big water disaster in 1954 i think it was in holland and Belgium. You are lucky with wha t you have !! treasures :-)

I feel very lucky for what I do have. I am so sorry that much of what you would have had was lost in the disaster. :(

I love the curiosity of looking at old photos, especially when there are ties such as yours to these two men. Great writing! :)

Thank you, that means a lot coming from you! :)

Wow! This is very well done Deb! You look so much like your grandpa Jessie. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you. I actually never realized how much I look Like Jessie until I put those pictures together. Its funny how that stuff works.

@debralee A lovely story, but such hardships too, which you uncovered. And yet, these are the things that make family history so interesting!
I am an avid genealogist. :)

I totally agree, these are the things that make history so interesting. We all have a story. :D

I've dabbled in genealogy but mostly just combing over stuff on Ancestry. I did uncover some interesting things though.

@debralee If you ever want help digging further, I'm always happy to offer suggestions.

Recently I dug around and discovered websites which published local newspapers, state by state in the US and found some published info on family members. This may be something for you to look into as you really never know just what might have made the papers. :)

Thanks so much, that is very generous.

You really never do know what makes the papers. I'd love to know the name of some of those sites. :D

Ancestry gave me two shocks. We are related to the Dalton Gang and Pocahontas. Talk about being on different ends of the scale! lol

I have Pocahontas in my tree in as much as that her line relates by marriage at some point. I've found that while researching you absorb a lot more interesting snippets of history than if just reading a book. It feels more signifciant if you can relate to it on a personal level.

Here is the newspaper site, have a good dig around. Not all areas will be covered so it really depends on what has been scanned in the area/s you're searching. Let me know if you have success! http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/

That is awesome, we could be really distantly related. :D You really do absorb more when you find out its your heritage.

I am happy to say I learned not all of the Dalton's were so bad. lol

Thank you so much!!

Next step - DNA testing lol

I've thought about it. I already know I am a mixed breed, Might as well know if what I've been told is accurate. lol
