Gardening - The Vertical Garden Potato Experiment - Update 1steemCreated with Sketch.

in #gardening7 years ago (edited)

Five days ago I posted my Vertical Garden Potato Experiment. Today I'm showing this photo to show how the potato plants are progressing in this planter. I really do think the planter is doing fine. The location isn't ideal. The plants are getting long and skinny, but like I said in the original post I have to balance light and temperature at this point.

More updates coming soon!

Thank you for sharing this time with me!

Looking forward to further updates. I'll be harvesting my potatoes very soon.

Do you think it may get too hot for them?

Yes. This time of year in TX is blasted hot. They are in this location because it is generally cooler here with the shade and breeze that we get on the porch. I'm turning the tower daily when I water it so all the plants get time in the better light. It's not ideal, but if I can get a few spuds out of it... it's worth it :)

I remember that potatoes were more expensive in the hot part of Brazil while
cassava, yucca, yams were cheap.

Yes exactly. Sweet potatoes love the heat. Mine are doing great as long as I keep a little water on them. Well, all of them that the horse can't reach! She loves the leaves 😂

Great idea 👍🏻 Looking forward to seeing your harvest.

The yield is going to be very low. Perhaps you'll get some seed potatos. And getting some seed potatos is not a bad thing because you can use them for your next planting when a more favorable seasons arrives.

Thanks for doing the update. I up voted you.

If I ONLY get seed potatoes I'll be happy enough 😃 The seed potatoes that I put in were going to go to waste if I didn't plant them. I missed my window opportunity with those seeds because I was so busy with sick kids and building barns. This way I may extend the season on keeping those seeds. It's like turning seeds into seeds LOL

Herbs do very well in those pots, as well as sempervivums (which i loooooove!). Carrots and radishes do ok too. Potatoes?? I dont know but i guess we'll see!

Herbs do wonderfully! The grow pockets on the Green Stalk garden system are very deep so carrots could do well too. Really you could grow just about anything in these. There are some interesting experiments on their site. Even corn! https://greenstalkgarden.com/how-we-grew-corn-in-containers/

I have ten stationary stacks that i filled with coir 10 years ago. I literally havent touched them in like 6 years and they are still going strong with Hen and Chicks Lol. I need to do a video on that because the wild blackberries have grown around them.....

oh I bet that is cool! Please post a pic or video :)

Im hoping they wont fall apart now. Theyre in the shade. Gotta fight the snakes now Lol

venomous snakes?

Probably an assortment. Gopher turtles like blackberries for food and protection, so they dig holes under them. Rattlesnakes and other danger noodles live in the holes with the turtles. Im bringing my .22 for sure

I don't think there's enough dirt on those potatoes.

Now that the soil has settled in the planters I'll add a bit more. This is an experiment. We'll see how it works out :)

how often do you turn it for every plant to get enough light ? I resteamed this post just because I found how to do it :D

I'm turning it about 1/3 every day. I don't know if it's the proper amount, but it seems to be working ok. Good on ya for learning the RESTEEM!

@daddykirbs any update in potato? That was interesting.... i really really like to know what is the next happened! ☺ please.... show more....

Hey @daddykirbs the potatoes I have in the cinder blocks are still doing well and still growing taller! Glad to see yours are coming along!
