The great Afo-Akum

Hello there, Steemians. Have you ever thought of where I, Chia Bertrand Fuchi with the steemit username @chiabertrand comes from? If you don't know then I will happily tell you where I come from and a little history of where I come from. I hope you will enjoy reading 🤗

As I earlier said, I'm called Chia Bertrand Fuchi and I'm a native of KOM. KOM is a village found in the Northwest region of Cameroon and it is one of the most respected and well known village here in the northwest because of its culture and amazing tradition. Do not worry, I will give a brief history of KOM in my next paragraph.

Brief History Of My Kom Tribe

12_1.jpg
Kom Location

As I earlier said, KOM is one of the biggest ethnic groups in the northwest region of Cameroon because of its culture and tradition. It is located in the Northwest region of Cameroon, BOYO is it's Division. It is divided into subdivision and my specific area where I come from is FUNDONG which is a subdivision in BOYO because BOYO division has four subdivisions which are Fundong, Belo, Njinikom and Mbingo.

It's quit easy to go to this areas because of the ring-road that was constructed by the Germans after when they failed to defeat KOM warriors during an encounter back then when Foin Yuh the 2nd was still Fun of KOM. The natives of KOM are welcoming, sociable and very loving because we treat everyone equal regardless of where they come from.

In our tribe, all male genders possesses a wide majority of powers over the female genders and are responsible for any decision making. The female genders are mostly involved in farm labour and domestic chores. Then the male genders are mostly involved In hunting, Fishing, digging of graves and all activities that involves extra power and intelligence.

Kom Language and Alphabet

Our native language (mother language) is called ITANGIKOM which is well vocalize, articulated and known across the entire Northwest Region and Cameroon out-large. I think there is no one in Northwest Bamenda and most part of Cameroon that doesn't understand good morning in our native language. Better still, "good morning" is translated in ITANGIKOM as "Wä Nchïï Ma Jùn". We call a "Man" who has gotten married to many wife's as "Bobeh" and we call his wife's as "Nawain". If you guys want I can continue teaching you guys in the comment section below

In Kom, our matrilineal succesion comes from the mother side instead of the father's side(quite a surprise). So when ever an adult male gender dies, all ownership of his properties including his childrens, wives, compounds and inheritance will be inherited by his nephew which is his sister's son(to be honest, this is the only part of Kom tradition that still baffles me till today because I'm not in support of it and probably, most of us) but it's our ancient tradition . It should rather be a man's child that inherits his properties not his sisters child.

As I earlier said, Kom natives are welcoming, loving and caring and our tradition emphasize on the respect of elders especially the ones with a red feathers who are called "nchi-dohs". They are the one's that usually seats with the fun and together make decisions. They also posseses great and special powers.

Nkoh From Ilaikom

We have a very nice traditional dance which everyone loves even including strangers, foreigners and people from different villages. We also have a lot of MASQUERADES (known as Juju's). Some of the well known ones are Nkoh, ma-buh, Quih-Foin, Na-ntang, Njong, Ma-Bu, Natang, Atingieh and so many others. I will be telling you guys more about this with videos of how they are dancing and displaying in my subsequent edition.

KOM masquerades displaying

The most powerful MASQUERADES which is also a status is known as Afo-Akum and it posseses a lot of spiritual powers. It is said that, this status usually communicate with the fun. I hope to discuss more about it in my next edition.

The great Afo-Akum

during occasions such as marriages, birth celebration known as "Born-house"(the welcoming of a new born baby), cultural days, funerals and other community celebration, we usually performed two main types of dances Known as *CHONG and NJANG. NJANG is usually performed by elderly women while CHONG is usually performed by elderly men.

KOM traditional meal

We also have a well known and recognize traditional meal which is fufu corn and Karti-Karti. Fufu is made of grind maize which have been well prepared and arrange into loafs. The Karti-Karti is made up of chopped fowl which is mixed with red oil. We inherited this traditional meal from our four-fathers because our main cash crops we cultivate is maize and the main domestic animals we Carta for is fowls and goats.

We, natives of KOM always try as much as possible to preserve our tradition by always representing it everywhere we go to. That is, we always try to establish our cultural organisation so that we could gather and bring out ideas by encouraging our culture development. For instance, we always dress in our traditional wears and organized traditional meetings anywhere we discover that we are many of us no matter the country, town or region and hold what we call contri-meetings. We are also fun of speaking our traditional language anywhere we fine our selfs because we are proud of our native language. This is why the language has gone viral and people enjoy us speaking it. In general, we have a very good legacy and heritage and this is the reason why I'm a proud Bikom-man

Conclusion

I hope you guys have had a glimpse and a clue about my tribe. In my next edition, I will tell you guys about Afo-Akum which is an ancient status that possesses a lot of powers and the history behind it. I will also tell you guys about some of our MASQUERADES and how they usually entertain and display during occasions and cultural events

The famous Karti Karti. But I thought that Achu was your traditional meal, same like the Mbouda tribe (Babadjou sub tribe)?
Great writing there we should encourage our young men and ladies to be more interested in our tradition, for we have much to offer to the world.

Did you know that the country France has in possession part of our history? Yes they do. They cherish it as one of their great heritage.

Good writing there once more

No bro, our traditional meal is fufu corn and Karti-Karti

Great writing there we should encourage our young men and ladies to be more interested in our tradition, for we have much to offer to the world

Did you know that the country France has in possession part of our history? Yes they do. They cherish it as one of their great heritage.

Yes I'm also aware of this bro. I'm happy they are also proud of our culture and love it.

The problem is, they are keeping it as a reminder to their future generations how they colonised us.
That is why they are keeping it.

Thanks for sharing your history of origin with us Bobeh. I have always heard about afo-kum and haven't really seen the picture as of today. We have most things in common as we speak almost the same dialect. Indeed we're blessed to be a country of multi- ethnicity.

Yes ooh my dear @monjuapollonia, I guest you are from Babanki which is a neighbor to my village. I think that is why we both share almost thesame culture, tradition and almost thesame language/dialect/mother-tongue

Indeed we're blessed to be a country of multi- ethnicity.

I love this part so much. This is why we should be proud of our culture and tradition because it has gain so much attraction even from other parts of the world

Thanks for dropping by🤗

Oh yes! We have Almost the same language and culture and I think it may not be just because we're neighbors
But we should find out more about the founding fathers and their similarities

Thanks for sharing with us your prestigious tradition that is cherished by many.

We call a "Man" who has gotten married to many wife's as "Bobeh" and we call his wife's as "Nawain".

I have a Kom friend who is like a sister, she used to call the brother Bobeh and I’m familiar with the name Nawain but had no clue about the meaning of such names.

The Karti karti in the image looks android. The typical dish does not require tomatoes and onions.

In contemporary society, I do not think this aspect of your tradition still holds. I know of many prominent Kom women who are fighting for the rights of women. Most Kom women nowadays are educated and I do not think they will succumb to this.

In Kom, our matrilineal succesion comes from the mother side instead of the father's side(quite a surprise). So when ever an adult male gender dies, all ownership of his properties including his childrens, wives, compounds and inheritance will be inherited by his nephew which is his sister's son.

To me this aspect promotes laziness as your nephew will seat and wait for you to die let them inherit your properties. I know of some Kom men whom because of this aspect of tradition willed their properties to the wife.

Kom tradition is unique among the over
253 ethnic groups in Cameroon.

During traditional marriage, how is the bride supposed to dress??
Or during traditional ceremonies in the palace, how are women and men dressed. Do you think women inclusion in the traditional setup can strengthen social cohesion??

Yeah you are right. If you noticed, you will realized that the onion and tomatoes are in the vegetable not in the Karti karti.

In contemporary society, I do not think this aspect of your tradition still holds. I know of many prominent Kom women who are fighting for the rights of women. Most Kom women nowadays are educated and I do not think they will succumb to this.

You may be right my dear but tradition is tradition and some people still practice this even out of the village and In most parts of the village, they still respect it especially those parts that haven't been civilized yet. What you are saying is true only in remote areas like in cities(though some villagers there still respect it) but once in KOM land, our tradition is always highly respected

To me this aspect promotes laziness as your nephew will seat and wait for you to die let them inherit your properties.

I hate this part of our tradition with passion because in most cases, when the nephew inherit their uncle's properties, they become very wicked most especially to their uncle's children and wife. But thank God this tradition doesn't holds once your properties is out of KOM land. This is why most KOM people invest and build their beautiful houses out of KOM land

I know of some Kom men whom because of this aspect of tradition willed their properties to the wife.

I think you are totally wrong here. A KOM man can willed his properties to his wife or children only when the properties are out of KOM land(that's why most of KOM people invest out of KOM just like in the case of late Pa Young Micheal). Once in KOM land, tradition most be respected as the man's wife and children won't be able to inherit anything from him

Kom tradition is unique among the over
253 ethnic groups in Cameroon.

I most recommend that you are 100% right here. We have one of the best tradition and culture. Just the matrilineal succesion that bother us. We hope this stops soon

During traditional marriage, how is the bride supposed to dress??
Or during traditional ceremonies in the palace, how are women and men dressed. Do you think women inclusion in the traditional setup can strengthen social cohesion??

I think this is a very important topic which I will answer it in my next subsequent post. Thanks for bringing this to my notice
