Discipline to achieve freedomsteemCreated with Sketch.

I've had couple long days at work, because apparently this time – the transition through September to October – is a busy one, because of Hullut Päivät, in other words, Buy Bunch of Consumables days. And we deliver add catalogues of those. It's not that out of the ordinary though, still the same ol' same stuff: sort mail, deliver mail.

It seems to me that there's a trend to hate on "shitty jobs" – maybe for a reason, since being tied to a job you don't enjoy isn't a good life. Freedom is the magic sauce everyone wants. However, what people might not realize is that if you want freedom to not need to do things you don't want to, you need financial independence, and to achieve that, unless you are from a wealthy family that lays everything ready for you, you need to change your spending habits. You need discipline.

If you say you don't care about money, well, I guess it explains why you haven't achieved the freedom to do anything you want, because you spend it on things you don't need, but want. I do care a fair bit about money, increasingly so because I've worked long hours for it. Strangely this seems to make no difference to some, because the default is to spend it on something that is guaranteed to depreciate in value.

Nowadays when I have the rare occasion of buying some consumable, I try to ask "do I need it or just want it?" Not everything goes one or the other category though: smartphone I could do without, I suppose, but it provides me enough utility day to day that it is a worthy purchase, especially when getting it used for half the price of a new one just after a year of its release – that's how I got mine.

I definitely don't like the mailman job that much that I'd do it long-term, but it's definitely not the worst either. I get lots of exercise in without even thinking about it. Many of us do it for free, or even pay for gym membership. I get payed for it. Well, I have responsibilities and not exactly gym equipment on my use (I do have an e-bike though, which is fun to ride), but you get the point. The sorting part is actually the tedious one, but it is a pretty good concentration exercise, if we keep looking for the silver lining. Reading books feels quite easy after dragging my sight over hundreds of names and streets from the lists to spot so that stuff will go where it should. When I read some books they actually have something to say, instead of being cold data of letters of which purpose is to just help organize stuff. How nice.

Many people might not like their jobs, but the question is: how many are changing their spending habits, building discipline and putting needs over wants in order to escape it? Freedom doesn't come for free, but it must be achieved with even more work than is put it in a simple job. But I guess people won't go the extra mile to do that since the job already all they can tolerate.

Say you don't like money. You don't like jobs so you don't earn any income. To survive without money you probably would have to hunt and raise food by yourself. Are you ready to go that far in avoidance of jobs, to learn all the necessary skills associated with such lifestyle? Thought so, it takes a shit ton of discipline and work to do that, especially from most of us who are used to urbanized lifestyle.

My eyes are a bit heavy at the moment even though I do get enough sleep in – another discipline I've had to prioritize in order to manage with the occasional 12 hour day – but what keeps me going is knowing that coupled with disciplined spending habits, I save a great deal of disposable income that I can invest for the future.

There are many things I'd like to do even right now, but instead I'm building the discipline of creation, since I believe it is a valuable skill that can pay back in the future. Well, it actually pays back surprisingly quickly, in 7 days to be exact. Usually it takes years to start getting anything back from creative endeavors.

It feels a bit of a rat race at times, or squirrel wheel as we say in Finnish – which is the idiom I actually prefer, because I am not in any kind of race with others, trying to outconsume them.

It'll not last forever though, since tomorrow is Friday and in a month it is November (Thailand trip) and January is just after three months – the time when I can retire from my short career as a mailman and start my studies for massage therapist.

Pictures on this post I took yesterday after getting home from work and tediously getting my camera from my backpack after pulling over my bicycle upon weeing something "I just had to shoot" with the new toy I got recently: Nikkor 55-200mm lens, coupled with Nikon D5200.

You're right that freedom doesnt come easily or for free. It's not always easy to stop yourself from buying what you want rather then only what you need. It takes discipline. But sometimes we have to sacrifice a little, especially the luxuries in life, in order to achieve a higher and more important and meaningful goal. It can also be satisfying though as well to live a bit more minimalistically. Good luck with the remainder of your mailman job!

To me buying stuff feels more like a chore and I don't really get the dopamine rush that motivates others. Maybe I've gone through the retail detox :D

I clicked on this faster than anything in a long time. I am working on my discipline (which is how my presence here is getting better) and mahn is it hardwork. Spending on others is something I am also working on as it's an issue in my life. I give too much (emotionally and financially) which probably has something to do with years of lack. I am learning to buy what I need other than want. It's hectic. Even tiresome for a spontaneous soul but it's working.

It is, but the upside potential is huge meanwhile the downside is "lost time" improving your skills :)

Gotta be somewhat selfish for your own sake as to invest time to those people who are also ready invest back to the relationship. Extractors are bad irl the same as in Steem.

You mentioned selfish... and investing and I am here like... That's my cue ♡

I just changed my job and do pretty long hours as well (11h), but I only work 14 days per month, got myself a photo laboratory job, mostly pleased with this.
Of course I buy some Eurojackpot tickets every now and then. Hoping for that 80mil prize XD. Yeah, hope does not die.

Nice, sounds like a job well fit for you!

I have a bit of a similar thing going on with my working schedule, because I work 4 days in a week - I actually like it a lot.

Oh, by the way, you wrote about you only buy things you need. Would you ever buy a car?

I have a car. I could live without it but a car is a freedom to do whatever I want whenever I want.
Probably most of my photo travels wouldnt have happened if it wasn't a car.

If I ever became so rich (aka. Steem millionare) that the expenses of owning a car would not make a difference on my financial well being, maybe. But right now just getting a license (I don't have one) would cost at least 1000€, even if someone like my dad would teach with a license, the bear minimum would be 600ish euros for what I could find with quick googles searches. This coupled with my disinterest with cars (well, Tesla is a cool thing, but that's as far as my interest with cars go) and living in Helsinki metropolitan area with excellent public transportation, getting a car is very down of the list of my priorities. I have the same mentality as you do, but for me the symbol of freedom is my bicycle. It has its trade offs with traveling time and seasonal availability (highways are no go during winter), but on the other hand it is much cheaper to maintain.

Probably most of my photo travels wouldnt have happened if it wasn't a car.

That's why I let my friends drive the car, meanwhile I'm the one taking the photos. Fair trade :D

Every decision comes with a cost. In economic terms we would say that every decision comes with an "opportunity cost", or "what is the next best thing I could do with this decision," and it's part of every decision: You, like I, choose to have a job to earn money to buy food. The opportunity cost to that is a different job, or less food, etc.

Even decisions that do not involve money are economic decisions. Take the time to read a book means that you can't play a video game, or watch tv. Which is more important? Well, that depends on the person.

Freedom definitely isn't free. In the immortal words of Rush, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." Just can't get away from it. :)

Losing tv or video games isn't a big deal for me since I don't really do them at all, I prefer books nowadays.

Things we exclude (consciously or unconsciously) can be as important as the things we actively include.

Those jobs that are mostly movement without thinking might be some of the best. It sounds like yours requires quite a bit of attention, but hopefully you are able to squeeze in some thinking time. I once had a job that I could accomplish with a free mind, and I used to write stories with all that free mind time. Scene by scene, and I just couldn't wait to get home to write them down...and had so little time to do it before collapsing into sleep and getting up early again. Sigh.

What lovely autumn leaves you have. I like squirrel wheel too. Rat race has never given me a clear image like squirrel wheel does.

I do think a fair bit, a lot of the times it's some dialog running in my head where I'm trying to explain stuff that I'm trying to understand. Sometimes I make up stories/mental imaginary like you do.
The job does require some attention, but I've done it to the extent that I inevitably start drifting in my mind. The delivering is the easy part so I can just listen some interesting podcasts.

The autumn is in full blossom here :)
