Travels With Connie #54 Interrupted

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Connie and I are on the road. We have a direction and a destination, but the route we'll take is a little fuzzy. It's really how we travel best.

You can plainly see that Connie is pretty well loaded. The bottom two bags are camping gear, the top bag is clothes. The left saddle bag has cameras and cigars in it, the right is primarily foul weather gear and tools including an air compressor and a tire repair kit.

This is Parker Dam in Arizona. It's a little visited place, but a big part of the hydrology of the Colorado River.

We spend our first night on the road in Las Vegas at the Stratosphere Casino, a pretty good room rate for Vegas. My morning inspection reveals a very small oil leak in the left shock tower. Just a spot really, we'll be fine.

Highway 93 up the eastern side of Nevada. Not much traffic is an understatement. Nevada is near 600 miles (1000 km)long if you enter the pointed end and go all the way to Idaho, which we are doing. It is quite possible that I may have inadvertently exceeded the posted speed of 65 MPH a time or two.



We spent the night in Elko, Nevada. An interesting little berg, I will certainly go back one day to explore the town and the area. Morning inspection revealed a couple of drops had fallen from the shock tower. I was beginning to become concerned.

This is the only real business except for ranches for most of 100 miles North of Elko. A bar and restaurant with a little bit of an RV park attached. I was obvious I was in 'see gas, buy gas' mode.

Nevada 225. Obviously a secondary road, the altitude was pretty high and it's a deliciously cool and inviting ride.



The end of Nevada 225 and the beginning of Idaho 55. This road will take me to the backcountry of SW Idaho, a place I'd never been. It's interesting country, another place I will return to for further investigation.

I spent the night in Ontario, Oregon. It is just across the Snake River from Idaho.

My morning inspection found a small puddle of oil out of the shock. For the rest of the day I would take it as easy on the suspension as I could. Not a simple project with the load and me on Connie.

This view is near the top of the Blue Mountains in Oregon. Very picturesque place. This turnout included a pretty good bump that let me know the fluid level in the shock was getting critical.

I made it to Kennewick, Wa shortly after noon. It was a planned stop to spend some time with my brother and Sister-in-Law. It's a good thing they are two of my favorite people because Connie is going to be in the hospital for at least a couple more days.
